Social and Emotional Learning and the Arts

January 19, 2021

The pandemic has affected all aspects of education. In response, A+ Schools of North Carolina has been focusing on the connection between the arts and social and emotional learning (SEL). The five core competencies of SEL—self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills—enhance students’ capacity to integrate skills, attitudes, and behaviors to deal effectively and ethically with daily tasks and challenges. Understanding how the arts provide students and teachers with engaging and empowering ways to learn and express themselves, A+ Schools has partnered with the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to create guidance documents that integrate the five core competencies of SEL with the arts. In addition, throughout January 2021, A+ Schools and NCDPI are offering four online, interactive sessions for educators to learn more about implementing SEL through the arts in their classrooms.
