High School teachers across North Carolina have until Friday, Oct. 19, to register for a national poetry recitation competition, Poetry Out Loud, sponsored by the North Carolina Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Poetry Society and the Greensboro Public Library.

Poetry Out Loud, now in its eighth year, is designed for high school students in grades nine through 12 in public, private and home schools. Last year, approximately 6,900 students across N.C. participated in the program.

The program starts in the classroom, expands to the state level and culminates at the national finals in Washington, D.C., April 29–31, 2013. Students learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Teachers can register online now through 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19.

A variety of resources are available for teachers, students and poetry lovers everywhere at the NEA’s Poetry Out Loud website, www.poetryoutloud.org. Interested teachers should complete the online registration form by Friday, Oct. 19.
