Ways and Means
Dance Company

Under the artistic direction of Barbara Dickinson, the Ways and Means Dance Company is a modern dance troupe interested in making connections with the communities in which it performs. Dickinson, who received a North Carolina Arts Council Choreographers Fellowship in 1996, is the Director of the Dance Program at Duke University. Ways and Means creates lively and intense choreography that addresses and actively confronts important social issues. The company’s commitment to connecting the art and the community is reflected in its school shows which use the students’ own creative voices as part of the performance.

Performances for audiences K–adult range from the hilarious to the serious, from the easily understood to the more challenging. Programs of Sacred Dance within church services and performance/workshops for senior citizens are available. The company particularly enjoys K–8 performances which incorporate poetry written by the students. Fee: $2,000–$3,500 for repertory performances; $400–$1,500 for Sacred Dance; $250–$600 for senior citizens performance/workshop; $500–$1,000 for school performances; plus expenses for all performances.

Additional activities include lecture/demonstrations, master classes, workshops and lectures designed to meet a sponsor’s specific needs. In more extensive community-based residencies, participants create and perform a new work. Fee: begins at $800 per day.
