The Center for Documentary Studies, an independent nonprofit organization affiliated with Duke University, is dedicated to a new vision of documentary work --— one that connects personal experience and creative expression to education and community life.

Literacy Through Photography through its Writer-In-the-Classroom project places recognized authors into week-long collaboration with elementary and middle school teachers. Luis Rodriguez and teachers from Neal Middle School will participate in the project, encouraging students to exercise their voices through language and the inherent power of their own stories.

Mr. Rodriguez will also be giving a public reading on Friday, March 10, sponsored by the Center for Documentary Studies, at El Centro Hispano (807 W. Chapel Hill Street, Durham). The reading is free and open to the public.

Poetry Workshop
Taller de poesia

This workshop will focus on writing poetry, with a multicultural slant. Luis Rodriguez will give some readings of his work and then lead participants in a random writing workshop, allowing them to tap into their creativity and writing skills simultaneously. Experienced writers will enjoy Luis committed artistry and social concern, while beginners will be thrilled to find the poet in themselves. Especially encouraged to attend are teens and their parents, and anyone interested in Latino culture. The cost of admission is $5.00 per person and it will be held at The ArtsCenter.

El Foro Latino

Luis Rodriguez will participate in the Latino Issues Forum, an annual event organized by El Pueblo, Inc., a statewide Latino advocacy and policy organization for the Latino community. There will be workshops, trainings, and opportunities to meet and network with community leaders from throughout the state. Mr. Rodriguez will lead a roundtable with the youth, and read from his work. This will take place at Camp Royal in Moncure, NC (Chatham County). Participants must register.

Through storytelling and poetry he will discuss his past involvement with gangs, alcohol, and drugs. Motheread program attendees will participate through their own storytelling and creative writing activities as directed by Mr. Rodriguez.

Luis Rodriguez will be an artist in residence in the Orange County Schools on March 16 from 8:15 am - 3:00 pm. He will visit the English classes of Efland Cheeks Elementary, Central Elementary, and C.W. Stanford Junior High. There will be a demonstration/lecture session with a large group of students incorporating a question/answer period, and a more focused teaching session with a small group, during which Mr. Rodriguez will provide students with feedback about their work.

El Sr. Luis Rodríguez estará con nosotros como "Artista en Residencia" en las Escuelas del Condado de Orange el día 16 de marzo 2000 desde las 8:15am-3:00pm.
