Artworks For State Buildings

North Carolina's Public Art Collection

The State of North Carolina purchased or commissioned artworks for state buildings beginning in 1982. Between 1989-1995, artworks were commissioned using one-half of one percent of a state building's construction budget. Through the Artworks for State Buildings Program, 61 projects around the state were completed. The last contracted project was installed in 2000. The North Carolina Arts Council continues to administer and maintain the artworks created through the program. A Collection Management Handbook prescribes guidelines for assessing the artwork's condition, cleaning, and general maintenance, as well as contracting with conservation professionals when treatment is warranted. Conservation needs and priorities are set as funding allows.

Public art in North Carolina is not limited to those artworks produced through the Artworks for State Buildings Program; numerous communities invest in public art through percent for art programs or project-by-project commissions.
