Terry M. Gess
La Napoule visual artist residency
"In November of 1996 I was invited to participate in a ten day
international pottery symposium in the People's Republic of China.
The experience of living and working in a world community of artists
proved to be a deeply insightful creative experience for me.
I plan to use the two month La Napoule residency to delve further
into the experience of an international artistic community. Specifically,
I look forward to the solid block of personal studio time, influenced
and informed by the lively conversation and cultural exchange
of the assembled community.
I expect that the geography of southern France, the community
of artists, and the freedom of unrestricted studio time will enrich
and enliven my artistic development."
Terry Gess received a BFA from Cleveland Institute of Arts and
an MFA from Souther Illinois University. After three years as
an artist-in-residence at The Penland School of Crafts he has
settled in the Penland area.
