"The Fellowship will allow me to develop and expand my current project, which centers around an informative and interactive space dealing with the visualization of contemporary politics. Titled "Labor < > Leisure (Global Economy)," it looks at the problematic nature of photography, the consequences of tourism and the effects of economic and cultural "globalization." The grant will also help me develop my relationship to North Carolina as an artist and educator by allowing me to focus on a more local level. Working with a UNC professor of anthropology, I will photograph Fayetteville, NC, focusing on its identity as a military town and its role in maintaining and exporting American culture."

elin o'Hara slavick has a B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY and an M.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She is an assistant professor of art at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and lives in Durham.
