Harry McDaniel
Sculptor
"The fellowship grant will support my work on a sculptural series
entitled "American Artifacts." The series resembles an exhibit
in a natural history museum, but the artifacts refer to contemporary
American beliefs and values. The fellowship will cover my living
expenses, studio overhead, and project costs for about five months
allowing me to be immersed in my work without the usual financial
pressures. I anticipate completing ten new pieces during that
period."
Harry McDaniel studied ecology at Warren Wilson College, Swannanoa,
NC and human ecology at College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, ME.
He works full time in his studio and lives in Asheville, NC.

Fetishes such as these can be found throughout America. They are
believed to contain powers which can go into people's bodies to
conclude periods of illness. The Americans perceive illness as
a condition in which tiny, invisible creatures from the air invade
their bodies and take control. They believe that the powers of
the fetishes go into their bodies and battle the tiny creatures,
which must be killed for health to be regained. These fetishes
are regarded as the givers of health.
