Eric Lawing
Painter
"My work involves a precarious weaving of automatism, imagery,
and abstraction. The process is initiated by applying several
layers of opaque paint interspersed with automatic drawing in
various media onto shaped wooden panels. These layers are then
sanded, leaving an abstract environment that engulfs and transforms
the later added subject matter. The repetitive process of applying
and removing media and image form a climate of disintegration
and reaffirmation. My subconscious is awakened and mimicked by
this layering of unplanned abstraction and imagery. I depict a
mystery as each layer of paint and each work in a series informs
the next and redefines its predecessor. I shape the future as
I reinterpret the past and explore the nature of consciousness
and creativity.
The expanding size of my work will increase production time and
materials costs. The Visual Arts fellowship will give me both
uninterrupted time for painting and money for materials -- a kind
of small miracle that is as rare for artists as it is ripe with
the potential for growth, improvement, and production."
Eric Lawing has a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at
