Joanne Metcalf
Composer
"I propose to use the fellowship funds to set aside time to compose
a new work for consort of solo voices. I have in previous works
undertaken the project of integrating techniques common to early
vocal music into the fabric of contemporary harmonic and rhythmic
materials while seeking to construct a vocal music that is as
'singerly' and idiomatic as possible. A fellowship would allow
me to truly reap the fruits of this labor; I am at this time prepared
to incorporate these concerns into a work of substantial scope
and duration."
Joanne Metcalf has an M.A. in Music Composition from Duke University
and a B.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She
is completing her Ph.D. in Music Composition at Duke University
and lives in Durham, NC.
