Penka D. Kouneva
Composer
"If granted the fellowship, I will use it to organize and produce
two premiere performances of my newest choral-orchestral work.
My cantata, Where Nature and Soul Meet, will involve the African-American Community Chorale, a conductor
and chamber orchestra. The text focuses on the relationship between
humanity and nature and raises concerns about the importance of
learning to live in harmony with nature while avoiding the destruction
of the environment. I also will offer an interactive, participatory
workshop for high school students who will learn an easy and appealing
excerpt from the cantata and sing it along with the Chorale. The
successful completion of this project will establish my reputation
as an even more versatile composer producing compelling works
in both chamber music and large choral-orchestra genres."
Penka D. Kouneva has a Ph.D. in Composition from Duke University,
an M.M. in Music Theory from the Bulgarian Academy of Music and
a Diploma in Music for Film, Theater and Television from the Academy
of Performing Arts, Sofia, Bulgaria. She is a composer of concert
music and is currently also pursuing a career as a composer of
film music. She has recently moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, where
she teaches at the University of Nevada at Las Vegas.
