Robert Johnson
Visual Artist
"With the grant I received from the NC Arts Council I was able
to carry out the proposal I submitted in my application: I researched
Frederik Church's South American journeys and went to Ecuador
to follow his voyage of 1857. I made 45 watercolor sketches and
filled a book full of notes. From this information I will do a
body of work. This grant made it possible for me to create my
first international series of paintings having to do with the
natural environment. My experiences in Ecuador made me realize
clearly that environmental problems are global and that many of
the same issues that come up here in the mountains of NC are the
same ones that come up all over the world. I came away with a
sense of awe and wonder at the richness of the natural environment
but also with a real sadness at how little of it is left and the
immense effort it takes to preserve this little bit."
Robert Johnson has an M.F.A. from Mills College and a B.S. from
the University of Louisville. He is an artist and lives in Burnsville,
NC.
