Bryant Holsenbeck
Visual Artist

"1997 was a very productive year for me as an artist, thanks especially to the time afforded me to develop new work because of my receipt of a NC Artist Fellowship. I was able to go to the Hambidge Center to take the time off of my regular schedule and begin thinking about the next steps that I wanted to take with my art work. While there I began a new series of works using the found and natural world around me. This work has developed from my concern with solid waste issues and my continuing desire to chronicle the ever growing tide of our waste stream. Another work I developed was a sculpture made out of recycled newspaper and freshly gathered compost in which I placed red wiggler earthworms. This was my first art work which I made of solid waste which was beautiful and educational as a sculpture and has remained useful upon its demise. The benefit of my Fellowship in terms of time to further develop my work has been invaluable."

Bryant Holsenbeck has an M.Ed and a B.A. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a mixed media artist and lives in Durham, NC.
