Donald Furst
Visual Artist
"Through the generous support of the Arts Council's grant program,
my 1996-97 Fellowship period was significantly productive. The
financial support freed me from the need to seek extra employment
in the evenings and summers, which in turn gave me the precious
studio time to complete two image suites. I was able to extend
traditional lithographic techniques onto glass and explore new
methods of photo-etching such as techniques involving photopolymer
film. The grant allowed me to purchase necessary but expensive
materials required in my work; to buy wood and metal section frames
in sufficient quantity to gain bulk discounts and to have enough
frames on hand to mount simultaneous gallery exhibits and to acquire
a decent-quality mat cutter that will not wreck my wrist and back.
Without the Fellowship assistance this would not have been possible."
Donald Furst has an M.F.A., M.A. and B.A. from the University
of Iowa. He is University Distinguished Professor at the University
of North Carolina in Wilmington where he resides.
