"'Blue Shift II' is representative of a new body of work called
The Expanding Universe Series that I began to develop last year with start-up funds provided
by the NC Arts Council 1996-97 grant. These new pieces blend imagery
used in my vessels with fusing and casting techniques to create
luminous sculptural forms.
The grant came at an important time in my career. It allowed me
to concentrate on new ideas and technical solutions without the
pressure of making a living, at least for the initial development
of the new series. With part of the grant money, I also made a
trip to Germany to locate some special glass rod for fusing."
Gary Beecham has a B.Sc. in art from the University of Wisconsin.
He worked for Harvey Littleton for several years before setting
up his studio in Spruce Pine, NC near Penland School.
