Bette Bates
Visual Artist
"The fellowship has made it possible for me to make my basement
studio space more functional and safer for artwork. I purchased
storage shelves, a large drafting table and clamp light, a lightbox,
Artograph projector and a tool box/tabouret. In the fall I made
a trip to New York City and visited museums and approximately
eighty galleries. This trip gave me a sense of current gallery
spaces and the kind of work they are showing, as well as the chance
to experience the wonderful tactile reality of work which I usually
see only through photographs. Receiving the North Carolina Arts
Council Visual Arts Fellowship is a life-long encouragement and
its impact on my work will be felt for years to come."
Bette Bates has an M.F.A. from East Carolina University and a
B.F.A. from Stephens College. She lives in Black Mountain, NC.
