Artist Opportunities
The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

General Artist Opportunities
I-Park Foundation, East Haddam, Conn.
The I-Park Foundation Inc., a 450-acre natural woodland retreat, is accepting applications for its self-directed artists' residencies. Residencies are offered from May through November 2011, with possible off-season sessions in April and December. Most sessions are four weeks. Work samples are evaluated through a competitive, juried process. Accommodations include room and board, wireless Internet and library facilities. Application fee applies.

The Likhachev Foundation, St. Petersburg, Russia
The Likhachev Foundation is accepting applications from professionals in the field of culture and history or arts from the U.S. who are currently working on creative projects related to Russian culture or history. Creative projects could be a museum exhibition project, a theater performance, a film, photo exhibition, preparation of fiction or research books, etc., related to Russian culture or history. Projects should be conceived in the U.S. for a broad American audience. Residence in Russia should serve as an important stage in the realization of the applicant’s cultural project. Command of the Russian language is very helpful but not required. Students are not eligible.

The Edward F. Albee Foundation, New York, N.Y.
The Edward F. Albee Foundation is accepting applications for its William Flanagan Memorial Creative Persons Center Residencies. The Albee Foundation maintains the center for writers, painters, sculptors and composers to work in a secluded and peaceful atmosphere. Writers and composers are offered a room; visual artists are offered a room and studio space. Residents are responsible for food, travel and other expenses. The residencies are offered in four- and six-week sessions.

Literary Arts
Ontario Veterinary College, Canada
To mark its 150th anniversary in 2012, the Ontario Veterinary College is producing a collection of poems, stories, essays and personal remembrances about the ways companion animals enrich lives and imaginations, as well as about the veterinary professionals who sustain and are part of life-long relationship with animals. Entry fee applies.

North Carolina Writers’ Network, Winston-Salem
The 2011 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize honors internationally celebrated N.C. novelist Thomas Wolfe. The winner receives $1,000 and possible publication in the Thomas Wolfe Review. The competition is open to all writers without regard to geographical region or previous publication. Entries for the 2011 Thomas Wolfe Fiction Prize must be no more than 12 double-spaced pages. Entry fee applies.

Visual Arts
Arts Council for Long Beach, Calif.
The Arts Council for Long Beach and the Long Beach Redevelopment Agency announce a request for qualifications for the creation of temporary (four months to one year) public artwork for vacant storefronts in redevelopment areas within the City of Long Beach. This is an open call to all interested professional artists/artist teams.

The Ernest Rubenstein Art Gallery is seeking submissions for the juried exhibition

National Association of Women Artists Inc., New York, N.Y.
The National Association of Women Artists Inc. is inviting women artists to apply for the Open Small Works Exhibition to be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, through Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2011, at the N.A.W.A. Gallery in New York. Entry fee applies.

Georgia Watercolor Society, Carrollton, Ga.
The Georgia Watercolor Society is accepting submissions for the 32nd Annual National Exhibition to be held at the Carrollton Cultural Arts Center Saturday, March 5, through Thursday, April 21, 2011. Cash prizes awarded. Entry fee applies.

Downtown Greenway, Greensboro
The Greensboro Downtown Greenway is accepting submissions from N.C. artists for the design and fabrication of a bench to be installed in summer 2011 on the second phase of the Downtown Greenway. The design of the bench will reflect the history of the area in which it will be installed, near Greensboro’s Blandwood Mansion, as well as its location near “Foundation Place,” a historic building that originally housed the executive offices of the Cone Export and Commission Company.

Town of Cary
The Town of Cary is launching its first Artistic Rain Barrel Project. Local artists are asked to submit proposals for designs to turn a regular rain barrel into a functional piece of art that can be placed at homes and businesses around Cary. The selected rain barrels will be incorporated into Cary’s Earth Day celebration during the 2011 Spring Daze Festival.

Caldwell Arts Council, Lenoir
The Caldwell Arts Council is now accepting portfolios with resumes, artist statements and biographies from artists or art groups interested in exhibiting in 2012 at the Arts Council Gallery or at the Caldwell Memorial Hospital Art-in-Healing Gallery. Two- and three-dimensional work will be considered. Exhibitors may share gallery space with one or more artists.

East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, Tenn.
The Slocumb Galleries at East Tennessee State University announces a call for entries for the 26th annual Positive/Negative national juried art exhibition. All two- and three-dimensional works and video art are eligible. Cash awards and possible solo exhibitions will be awarded. Entry fee applies.

Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition, N.Y.
Wide Open 2 is a juried art show that seeks to explore all the possibilities of the theme “wide open.” The call is open to all U.S. residents ages 18 and older working in traditional and non-traditional two- and three-dimensional media, except for film/video. Exhibition dates are Saturday, March 12, through Sunday, March 27. Entry fee applies.

Town of Chapel Hill
University Mall and The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists, architects, design professionals and teams to submit letters of interest and images for the third annual Scrapel Hill competition and exhibition, a juried competition and annual event will be displayed throughout University Mall in Chapel Hill from Earth Day, Friday, April 22, through Saturday, June 18, 2011.

Atelier 6000, Bend, Ore.
Atelier 6000 is a gallery that presents local and national artists working across multiple disciplines with an emphasis on contemporary book arts, works on paper and printmaking. Submissions are now being accepted for the juried exhibition Survey: Charts, Maps, Ledgers, Navigation to be held Friday, Feb. 4, through Monday, Feb. 28, 2011. This all-media exhibition includes proposals for installation and performance art. Entry fee applies.

Town of Chapel Hill
The Chapel Hill Public Arts Office invites artists to apply for the 2011–2012 juried exhibitions series. Original two- and three-dimensional artwork by selected artists will be displayed in Chapel Hill Town Hall and other town cultural facilities beginning May 2011. This exhibition is open to all artists. North Carolina artists are encouraged to apply. There is no application fee.

Dogwood Arts Festival, Knoxville, Tenn.
The 2011 Dogwood Arts Festival is accepting submissions for its regional fine arts exhibition to take place in April at Bennett Gallery. Artists who live within a 300-mile radius of Knoxville are eligible. Two- and three-dimensional work will be considered. Cash prizes awarded. Entry fee applies.

The Retreat, East Hampton, N.Y.
The Retreat, a nonprofit domestic violence agency, is hosting the third annual Juried Art Show in the Hamptons. The top 25 entries will be shown in group show at the Kathryn Markel Fine Arts Gallery in Bridgehampton, N.Y., opening Saturday, April 30, 2011. Best in Show will win a solo exhibition. Entry fee applies. All entry proceeds benefit The Retreat.

First Street Gallery, New York, N.Y.
First Street Gallery is accepting submissions for its 2011 national juried competition to be held Wednesday, June 22, through Saturday, July 16, 2011. Eligible works include oils, acrylics, watercolors, mixed media, pastels, drawings, prints and sculpture in any medium from artists 18 years of age or older. Entry fee applies.

Artspace, Raleigh
The Regional Emerging Artist Residency is a program that provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. One artist in his or her early professional career is chosen from a regional pool of applicants. Artspace grants two six-month residencies per year in Raleigh. The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. A fully supported exhibition of the resident's work will be presented in the Artspace lobby after the residency.

Video/Filmmakers
Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
POV, public television's premier showcase for independent, nonfiction film, is seeking to support emerging filmmakers through its Diverse Voices Project, a co-production fund supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Diverse Voices Project will provide funding (up to $100,000), mentorship and a national broadcast on POV to documentary directors and producers from communities typically underrepresented in the mainstream broadcast media.

Producers Institute for New Media Technologies, San Francisco, Calif.
Producers Institute for New Media Technologies is seeking proposals for science-themed interactive and participatory digital media projects and tools. The Producers Institute for New Media Technologies is a 10-day residency for eight creative teams (independent producers or public broadcasters) with a shared goal of developing and prototyping a multi-platform project inspired by or based on a significant documentary project.

South Arts, Atlanta, Ga.
South Arts announces a call for submissions for the 2011–2012 Southern Circuit, the nation’s only regional tour of independent filmmakers that provides communities with an interactive way of experiencing independent films by highly talented independent filmmakers. All submissions are accepted online via Withoutabox.

Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Durham
Full Frame is accepting applications for the 2011 Garrett Scott Documentary Development Grant. This grant funds first-time documentary makers for travel and accommodations at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Thursday, April 14, through Sunday, April 17, 2011. For four days, grant recipients will be given access to films, participate in master classes and be mentored by experienced filmmakers. Two filmmakers will be chosen for the 2011 grant.

Studio Space
The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation, Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation funds The Space Program, a national program which provides free studio space in the New York City/Brooklyn area for the making of new works of art. The Space Program is open to visual artists 21 years of age and older. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent U.S. residents and not in school at the time of residency. Emerging, midcareer and older artists are encouraged to apply. Seventeen studios are available for one year beginning Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011. No stipend or equipment is provided.
