The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

General Artist Opportunities

Referential Magazine, Charlotte
Referential Magazine is accepting unpublished submissions that build from one piece of writing (prose or poetry). From that piece, artists should submit referential material. This material could be visual, auditory, written, etc. Artists may submit one genre at a time.

The Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center, Bellagio, Italy
The Bellagio Center's residency program allows for one month of disciplined work, uninterrupted by the professional and personal demands of daily life, in a diverse and stimulating community of fellow residents. Residencies typically last four weeks, and spouses/ partners may accompany residents. Residents include an internationally diverse range of scholars, scientists, journalists, writers, artists, non-governmental organization practitioners and policy makers.

Japan-United States Friendship Commission, Washington, D.C.
The Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission works cooperatively with the National Endowment for the Arts to sponsor The U.S/Japan Creative Artists' Program. The program provides support for up to five outstanding contemporary and traditional artists from the U.S. to spend a three-month residency in Japan to pursue their individual artistic goals. Eligible applicants are architects, choreographers, composers, creative writers, designers, media artists, playwrights, visual artists or solo theater artists who work with original material (including puppeteers, storytellers and performance artists). Multidisciplinary artists and artistic directors of theater or dance companies are also eligible.

Performing Artists

Shubert Foundation, New York, N.Y.
The Shubert Foundation is accepting grant applications from U.S. nonprofit professional theaters. Grants will be awarded to nonprofits that have an established artistic, administrative and fiscal track record and are working to develop new works and other significant contributions to the field of professional theater.

Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition, Lincolnton
The Heafner/Williams Vocal Competition seeks to identify and offer assistance to highly talented vocalists and to encourage the theatrical vocal arts. The competition is open to singers from ages 18 to 40 who are residents of or enrolled in school in N.C. Cash prizes awarded.

Literary Artists

Fine Arts Work Center, Provincetown, Mass.
The Fine Arts Work Center offers a unique residency for writers and visual artists in the crucial early stages of their careers. The center provides a seven-month fellowship to 20 fellows each year in the form of living/work space and a modest monthly stipend. Residencies run from October 1 through May 1.

The Writers’ Workshop, Asheville
The Writers’ Workshop announces its 22nd Annual Memoirs Competition. Multiple entries are accepted; each submission must be 4,000 words or less. All work must be unpublished. Entry fee applies.

North Carolina Writers’ Network, Winston-Salem
The Rose Post Creative Nonfiction Competition is open to any writer who is a legal resident of N.C. or a member of the N.C. Writers’ Network. An entry fee must accompany the manuscript(s). Subjects may include traditional categories such as reviews, travel articles, profiles or interviews, place/history pieces or culture criticism. Cash prizes awarded.

National Endowment for the Arts, Washington, D.C.
The NEA presents The Big Read, a program to encourage reading and enrich the cultural life of communities. Organizations selected to participate will receive a grant, access to online training resources and opportunities, educational and promotional materials to support widespread community involvement and participation, an organizer’s guide for developing and managing The Big Read activities, inclusion of the organization and its activities on The Big Read website, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national program.

Visual Artists

The Pollock-Krasner Foundation, New York City, N.Y.
The Pollock-Krasner Foundation offers grants based on the criteria of recognizable artistic merit and demonstrable financial need. The foundation welcomes applications year round from visual artists who are painters, sculptors and artists who work on paper, including printmakers.

Freedman Gallery, Albright College, Reading, Pa.
Freedman Gallery is accepting entries for its juried exhibition Gender Matters/Matters of Gender to be presented Wednesday, March 23, though Wednesday, April 20, 2011. The show will include works by artists of both sexes who work from a consciousness of how gender is reflected in art, how the artist's gender influences her or his medium, and how gender often affects the circumstances in which the artist creates. Entry fee applies.

Palm Beach County, Fla.
Palm Beach County’s Art in Public Places program seeks to commission artists to create artistic railings for the pedestrian bridge and overlook in Mounts Botanical Garden’s Shade & Color Island. In addition to designing, fabricating and installing railings, artists are encouraged to address the bridge and overlook’s ground plane to create unified artistic environments with artwork that is durable, permanent, low maintenance and in compliance with ADA guidelines.

Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
The Broward Cultural Division’s Public Art and Design program seeks to commission up to three artists to design, fabricate and install artworks that improve functionality and passenger experience at several existing cruise ship terminals under renovation at Port Everglades.

Contemporary Art Museum, NC State University, Raleigh
Contemporary Art Museum is accepting submissions from new media artists and designers for artwork to be included in a Technology + Art + Design exhibition at the new Contemporary Art Museum (CAM), a museum of art and design in Raleigh.
CAM intends to include a broad range of artistic practices and is particularly interested in proposals of site-specific work that fully utilize our space or engage the space in a nontraditional manner.

City of Norfolk, Va.
The City of Norfolk seeks “iconic, brave and fun” artwork for MacArthur Square, the site of a new light rail station. The square is intended as a meeting place for both residents and tourists and as a comfortable counterpoint to the more formal government center light rail stop located at City Hall and the courthouses.

City of Philadelphia, Pa.
Philadelphia’s Public Art Program and the Philadelphia International Airport announce a call for qualifications for interior artwork for the Terminal B-C Renovation Project. This competition is open to artists and artist teams who reside in the U.S. There is a design stipend for selected semi-finalists to create proposals.

The Imperial Centre for the Arts & Sciences, Rocky Mount
The Rocky Mount Arts Center announces a call for its national juried exhibition Handcrafted: A Juried Exhibition of Ceramics, Fiber, Glass, Metal and Wood to be held Saturday, Jan. 29, through Sunday, May 22, 2011. This exhibition will feature a variety of traditional, mixed and new craft media from across the U.S. Artists ages 18 or older working in any craft media are eligible.

Los Angeles County Arts Commission, Calif.
The Los Angeles County Arts Commission’s Civic Art Program seeks an artist or artist team to execute a unique and dynamic artwork for the new Pico Rivera Library, which will be a focal point of the community. An artist willing to interact with local art students is desired. The commission is open to professional artists living in the U.S.

The City of Raleigh Arts Commission
The City of Raleigh Arts Commission, in partnership with Capital Area Transit, invites local artists to submit artwork for the third ART-ON-THE-MOVE, a public art project exhibiting art on Raleigh buses. Participating artists create an imaginative art gallery on wheels, with original artwork wrapped onto buses through a vinyl heat-wrap process. The artwork remains on the buses for six months.
