Two Opportunities from the North Carolina Arts Council
Artist Fellowship Awards
The N.C. Arts Council is accepting applications for the 2011–2012 Artist Fellowship awards for poetry, prose writers, songwriters, composers, playwrights and screenwriters. The fellowship award is $10,000.

Grant Workshops
The N.C. Arts Council will hold three workshops for writers and literary translators interested in applying for its 2011–2012 Artist Fellowship grant: Wednesday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. at UNC Greensboro Faculty Center in Greensboro; Monday, Oct. 18, at 6 p.m. at the Durham Arts Council; and Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 6 p.m. at the Arts & Science Council in Charlotte. Banu Valladares, literature director for the Arts Council, will talk about the grant process, offer tips on submitting competitive applications and discuss other resources available to writers through the Arts Council.

General Artist Opportunities
City Arts, Greensboro
The Caldcleugh Multicultural Arts Center in Greensboro is looking for volunteers and interns to instruct cultural arts classes and workshops for youth in grades K–12. Ideal candidates are either emerging artists or visual and performing arts students. All candidates must have instructional knowledge of art, music, dance or theater or have extensive knowledge of a cultural tradition in the arts. All traditions and art forms are considered.

Performing Artists
Arts Together Inc., Raleigh
Dance artists, dance educators, teachers of exceptional students, mental health professionals who work with youth and other teachers of youth with disabilities are invited to participate in “Stepping Up: Creating Artful Dance with Youth with Disabilities,” a project to experience the richness and humanity of dance-making with disabled youth. This is a pilot project to train dance educators, dance artists and others in a multidisciplinary approach to create dance-theater with youth who have physical, mental or emotional disabilities. Training will take place Friday, Nov. 5, through Sunday, Nov. 7, followed by hands-on experience in the community. Fee applies.

Literary Artists
Tennessee Williams Festival, New Orleans, La.
The Tennessee Williams Festival is accepting submissions for its 2011 fiction contest. A submission is one original short story, written in English, up to 7,000 words. The 2011 festival will be held Wednesday, March 23, through Sunday, March 27, 2011. This contest is open to writers who have not yet published a book of fiction. Cash prizes awarded. Asheville Poetry Review, Asheville

Pittsburg State University will host a juried exhibition, Visual Territory, exploring the intimate territories of personal experience and the global landscapes of place and environment Friday, Feb. 4, through Friday, March 4. The call for artists is open to all artists residing in the U.S., 17 years or older, and is open to all media except video.

Johnson County, Olanta, Kan.
The Johnson County Facilities Management Office is issuing a request for proposal/qualifications for a public art project for the new crime lab under construction.
Artists will coordinate work with county staff, representatives from the Sheriff's department, consultants and the design team. The estimated budget for artwork and all related art project costs is $280,000.

The University of Arkansas Public Art Oversight Committee requests qualifications from professional artists or teams of professional artists for a site-specific, original outdoor monument to be commissioned for the Fayetteville campus. The artwork will honor Silas Hunt.

DC Creates!, Washington, D.C.
DC Creates! Public Art Program and its partner, Office of Public Education Facilities Modernization, are seeking artists to create artistic designs and permanent public artworks to enhance four new or newly renovated D.C. public senior high schools. Selected artists should have experience working with architects, community representatives, high school students and government entities.

First Night Raleigh
First Night Raleigh 2011 is seeking talented artists and designers to create one of a series of lighting installations for Lichtin Plaza in front of the Progress Energy Center during the month of December. Using holiday lights as their primary medium, artists are asked to create an individual installation that will transform Lichtin Plaza into an open-air stage of light and color.

American Payroll Association, San Antonio, Tex
The American Payroll Association seeks to commission artwork to be used in 2011 marketing and promotional materials for APA’s National Payroll Week public awareness campaign. Artwork will be viewed by most of APA’s 22,000 members and millions more through the National Payroll Week public relations efforts. The artwork should convey the idea that payroll professionals and America’s workforce work together to ensure the American way of life.

The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County
The City of Fayetteville and the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County are seeking qualifications from artists for seven outdoor sculptures fabricated in part from decommissioned military artifacts. The sculptures will be installed within the Service Plaza of the newly constructed North Carolina Veterans Park in Fayetteville to define space and to integrate silent stories of service into the fabric of the park.

Swannanoa Valley Fine Art League, Black Mountain

North Carolina State University, Raleigh
NC State University is seeking proposals from artists/teams to create a memorial art installation for the future Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The memorial is dedicated to Randall B. Terry Jr., a longtime supporter of the veterinary program at NC State.

Association of Glass and Clay Artists, Brea, Calif.
The Clay and Glass National Juried Competition will take place Saturday, Jan. 22, through Friday, March 4, 2011, at the City of Brea Art Gallery in Brea, Calif. The competition is open to artists residing in the U.S., 18 years or older. Artwork must be composed of at least 70 percent clay, glass or a combination of the two, and may be functional or sculptural. Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art, Greensboro
The Green Hill Center for North Carolina Art invites artists to submit a work in the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships Poster Competition. The competition is open to all N.C. artists. From the submissions, 30 finalist works will be selected to be exhibited at the Greensboro Coliseum during the month of January 2011. A winning piece will be announced at a reception on Saturday, Jan. 22, at the Green Hill Center. The artist with the winning work will receive a $3,000 cash prize in exchange for allowing his/her work to be reproduced on an official poster for and to be distributed during the 2011 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and by the U.S. Figure Skating Organization.

Penn State Altoona is accepting applications for a one-semester (spring 2011) teaching residency in studio art with an emphasis in painting. The National Association of Women Artists announces its Margo Harris Hammerschlag Direct Carving Competition. A grant of $10,000 will be awarded to a female artist whose media is direct carving. The competition is open to women sculptors who are 18 years of age or older and U.S. citizens or permanent residents. All work must be original. A minimum of 75 percent of an individual work must have been produced by direct carving.

Artspace is accepting applications for its summer artist-in-residence program for 2011. The selected artist is invited to work in an open-studio setting for four weeks. Visual Overture Magazine, a quarterly exhibition-in-print publication, is now accepting entries for "Featured Emerging Artists" to be presented in the spring 2011 issue.
