General Artist Opportunities

Society for the Arts in Healthcare
Johnson & Johnson, working in partnership with the Society for the Arts in Healthcare, seeks to promote the use of the arts to enhance the healthcare experience for patients, their families and caregivers. Johnson & Johnson/Society for the Arts in Healthcare grants are for a total of $60,000 each over a period of three years. To be eligible for consideration, grant applicants must be a current member of Society for the Arts in Healthcare, located in the U.S. or Canada and a nonprofit organization or a governmental agency.

Literary Arts

Bellwether Prize for Unpublished Manuscripts
The Bellwether Prize supports the writing and publication of serious literary fiction addressing issues of social justice in culture and human relations, underlining the political power of literature. In addition to the $25,000 cash prize, the award guarantees publication of the winning novel by a major U.S. publishing house. The publishing partner for the 2009–2010 prize is Algonquin.

Visual Artists

Discovery Place, Charlotte
Discovery Place is seeking applications from state, local and regional artists to engage in projects throughout the facility as part of the current renovation. Discovery Place is re-inventing its visitor experience, filling the Museum with all new science and technology exhibits and interactive displays that present science in a topical and contemporary way. Artists are invited to participate and collaborate in the renovation process.

N.C. State Fair
The prospectus is now available for the juried exhibition for fine artists and photographers at the 2009 N.C. State Fair. The exhibition is open to all N.C. residents with original works of art in the specified media completed within the past two years and not previously exhibited at the N.C. State Fair. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Charlotte Art League
The Art Beyond Sight 2009 exhibition is open to all artists 18 years and older. Artists both sighted and visually impaired may create tactile and multi-sensory works of art expressly so that blind and visually impaired people can actively explore them. All work must be original and not previously exhibited in a Charlotte Art League show during the past year or previously exhibited in a Charlotte Art League judged or juried show.

Downtown Arts District Sidewalk Painting Festival, Pittsburg, Kan.
The Colonial Fox Theatre Foundation in Pittsburg, Kansas, requests submissions from professional artists for a juried sidewalk painting event on October 17. Accepted artists are invited to create artwork on downtown arts district sidewalks. All artists receive an equal workspace and six-hour time limit to complete work. Artists supply sidewalk chalk or other pre-approved material. Lodging discounts available. Cash prizes will be awarded. Rain cancels the event.

Artspace, Raleigh (Emerging Artist-in-Residence Program)
Artspace's Emerging Artist-in-Residence Program provides emerging visual artists residing in North Carolina time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. The six-month residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. A $25 application fee applies.

Artspace, Raleigh (Summer Artist-in-Residence Program)
Artspace's Summer Artist-in-Residence Program provides an established artist with a brief studio opportunity to work on a specific project while also teaching two classes as part of the Summer Arts Program. The residency culminates in a six-week exhibition of the artist's work in Gallery One at Artspace. A $25 application fee applies.

The City of Alexandria, Va.
The City of Alexandria, Va., seeks to commission public art for the Charles Houston Recreation Center. The call is open to all artists or design groups. The purpose of the public art project is to honor and memorialize Charles Hamilton Houston and to recognize the historical importance of the former Parker-Gray High School to the community which surrounds the Center. The project's overarching theme is "Education and Civil Rights."

Carolina Artist Studio Gallery and the Arts Council of Carteret County present the 5th N.C. Juried ClayArts Show during the month of November. The ClayArts show is open to all ceramists and potters ages 18 and older residing in N.C. All work must be original, wheel thrown, hand built, slab rolled or sculptural. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Torpedo Factory Art Center, Alexandria, Va.
Pandora's Box juried exhibition is an exhibition requiring artists to create work based on the theme of "Pandora's Box"—the vessel carried by the Greek mythological character, Pandora. The submitted work must be based on a container form and the maximum dimension of the container cannot exceed 12 inches in any one direction. The work inside the container may exceed 12 inches. Pandora's Box will run Dec. 10–Jan. 10, 2010.

Filmmakers

Transvideo Studios, Mountain View, Calif.
Transvideo Studios helps filmmakers achieve their goals through their In-Kind Matching Grants Program. Filmmakers in the process of seeking funding may apply for a matching grant from Transvideo Studios in advance. Once approved, Transvideo Studios will provide the filmmaker a Letter of Support, outlining their interest in the project. Filmmakers with production or post-production funding may apply to the program and have those funds "matched" in value with equipment use and services.

Deadline: Applications are processed on a rolling basis and are reviewed by Transvideo Studios experienced staff of producers. Filmmakers will be notified of the status of the application within 2 to 4 weeks.

The Boston Latino International Film Festival
The Boston Latino International Film Festival (BLIFF) is pleased to announce the call for entries for feature films, documentaries and shorts. BLIFFs 8th annual festival will take place over two weekends in November. Completed U.S. and international films may be submitted.

The Fledgling Fund, New York, N.Y.

The Fledgling Fund supports innovative media projects that can play critical roles in igniting social change. The primary focus of The Fledgling Fund's creative media initiative is outreach and community engagement. Projects that wish to be considered for funding must submit a letter of inquiry using an online form as a first step in the application process. From these initial inquiries, smaller pools of applicants are invited to submit a full application.

Film Independent's 2010 Directors Lab, Los Angeles, Calif.
Designed to help directors who are prepping their feature films, the Directors Lab is an intensive eight-week program running in Los Angeles each winter in which Lab Fellows workshop scenes from their features. Film Independent provides Lab Fellows with camera and sound packages to shoot their scenes. Additionally, Fellows receive mentorship from established directors and other industry professionals. The Directors Lab is sponsored by Kodak.
