The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.
The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

Opportunities from the N.C. Arts Council
Regional Artist Project Grants 2010-11
Artists in participating North Carolina counties may apply for funding to pursue projects that further their career development. Grant amounts vary by region and project, but usually range between $500 and $2,000. Eligible projects include the creation of new work, purchase of supplies and materials, professional development workshops, travel support related to research or study, and production of promotional materials, including Web sites, CDs, DVDs and brochures. Deadlines are set by each region.

 Two Requests for Artist Qualifications from the N.C. Arts Council The North Carolina Arts Council seeks to commission artists for two park-sited public art projects, each of which will become a centerpiece of cultural tourism trails celebrating the state’s rich history, creative heritage and contemporary artistic practices.
The first public art project is for North Carolina’s African American Music Trail at
All-America City Park in Kinston. The second is for North Carolina’s Historic Happy Valley Byway on the Yadkin River Greenway Trail in Patterson.
Applicant artists must be U.S. citizens or legal residents aged 18 years or older. Artists may apply to both RFQs, but they must submit two separate application packages.

General Artist Opportunities
ConsiderIt
ConsiderIt is an altruistic organization and online arts journal that presents original writing, visual media and music in order to raise funds for artists and select grassroots organizations. Every three months ConsiderIt hosts a contest for all writers, artists and musicians over 18 years of age. Finalists will be published on the Web site for three months and one winner will receive a cash award. Entry fee applies.

American Council of Learned Societies, New York, N.Y.
American Council of Learned Societies invites individuals to apply for the sixth annual Digital Innovation Fellowships. The fellowship program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. Each fellowship carries a stipend of up to $60,000 toward an academic year’s leave and provides for project costs of up to $25,000.

Performing Artists
The American Composers Forum, St. Paul, Minn.
The American Composers Forum has announced a new national composition contest to encourage creativity by composers across the U.S. and to recognize and reward their accomplishments. Entries are welcome from composers of all ages.

The 2011 Kore Press First Book Award is open to any female writer who has not published a full-length collection of poetry. Writers who have had chapbooks of less than forty-two pages printed in editions of no more than 400 copies are eligible. Entry fee applies.

City of Raleigh Arts Commission
The Piedmont Laureate program is accepting applications from creative nonfiction writers for 2011. Authors of works including biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, travel writings and new journalism are eligible to apply. Writers must be residents of Alamance, Durham, Orange or Wake counties. The 2011 piedmont laureate will receive a $6,500 honorarium to present readings and workshops and encourage creative writing and promote literature at select public events throughout the year.

Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, La.
The 2011 Tennessee Williams Festival is accepting submissions for its one-act play contest. Ten finalists will be selected and cash prizes will be awarded. Plays cannot be previously published or produced. The 2011 festival will take place Thursday, March 23, through Sunday, March 27. Entry fee applies.

Valley Metro Rail, Phoenix, Ariz.
Valley Metro Rail in Phoenix, Arizona, is seeking six public artists for the Light Rail Transit Mesa Extension project. TriMet invites qualified artists to apply for public art commissions for the Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project. Caldwell Arts Council is pleased to announce Art Around Caldwell: Gallery and Studio Tour, the first county-wide arts event, to be held Saturday, Oct. 16, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Artists and galleries in Caldwell County are invited to participate by opening their studio to the public for a day.

Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh
The Visual Art Exchange is seeking proposals for exhibitions at The Annex, an experimental gallery space located in City Market in downtown Raleigh. Artists are invited to register for a professional digital image shoot with photographer Jason Dowdle Tuesday, Sept. 7. Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Snowmass Village, Colo.
Anderson Ranch is calling for submissions for The Big Light Show, a juried exhibition of works that focuses on light as a medium or inspiration. Artists of all media are invited to submit work that uses light as its subject, inspiration or media in all its forms. The exhibition will take place Monday, Oct. 4, through Wednesday, Nov. 24. Apex Arts Council
The Apex Arts Council, in conjunction with Rex Healthcare, will hold a juried art show and auction Saturday, Sept. 11, through Saturday, Sept. 18. All artists in the Apex area are welcome to enter, have their work judged and participate in the auction at the end of the show. No entry fee will be charged for artwork to be auctioned. The artist will receive 70 percent of the auction price of the work .

Dorothy Day Center, St.Paul, Minn.
Catholic Charities of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, in partnership with Public Art Saint Paul and the Saint Paul Design Center landscape, is seeking an artist to develop a proposal for the design and artistic programming of the Dorothy Day Center in downtown St. Paul. The Dorothy Day Center provides drop-in services during the day and overnight shelter for individuals experiencing homelessness. The public art project proposes to convey a positive message about the Dorothy Day Center and its clientele
and about the City of Saint Paul's concern for all of its citizens at this critical downtown gateway site.

Winnepeg Arts Council, Canada
The Winnipeg Arts Council invites professional artists to submit expressions of interest for a permanent, contemporary artwork using elements of water and light in downtown Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. This is a national and international competition for a major artwork to mark the designation of Winnipeg as the Cultural Capital of Canada for 2010.

Carolina Balloon Fest, Statesville
Carolina Balloon Fest is seeking artists to sell their artwork during Carolina Balloon Fest Friday, Oct. 22, through Sunday, Oct. 24, in the Artisan Village. National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) will host the NMAI Art Market Saturday, Dec. 4, and Sunday, Dec. 5, at two indoor venues: the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and at the museum's George Gustav Heye Center in New York City. Up to 38 vendors will be selected per venue based on quality of work, regional representation and ability to have a large inventory with a variety of price points. Entry fee applies.

Artspace invites craftspeople and artists working in a variety of craft media to enter Fine Contemporary Crafts, a biennial juried exhibition. Eligible media includes functional and decorative ceramics, furniture, glass, jewelry, basketry, fiber, mixed media, paper and wood. Fine art media such as photography, painting or printmaking are not eligible except when incorporated into another acceptable craft category. The Caldwell Arts Council is seeking artists to participate in the annual Satie's Holiday Show and Sale, Friday, Dec. 3, through Friday, Dec. 24. Items to be considered for the holiday sale will be juried by committee. All items must be handmade, and the most successful items each year are those priced less than $50.

The National Art Museum of Sport, Indianapolis, Ind.

Coastal Carolina Artists and Crafters Guild invites artists to enter the Decorated Door Contest which will be part of the Holiday Craft Fair and Car Show scheduled Saturday, Nov. 13. Fontbonne University Fine Arts Gallery is accepting submissions for The Figure Now, an international juried exhibition. The Figure Now is a drawing exhibition focused on the contemporary expression of the human form and is open to emerging as well as established artists worldwide. Examples of acceptable work include monochrome oil painting on gessoed paper, colored pastels on vellum monochrome conte and oil paint on mylar. The exhibition will take place Friday, Feb. 4, through Wednesday, March 2, 2011. Entry fee applies.

The CPB/PBS Diversity and Innovation Fund has issued a request for proposals for a new weekly primetime series that includes content that will expand viewership and usage, reaching an adult audience on-air and online that reflects the diversity of the 40- to 64-year-old U.S. population.

Carrboro Film Festival, Carrboro
The Carrboro Film Festival is accepting submissions of short films (less than 20 minutes) to be featured Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Century Center in Carrboro. Filmmakers may submit up to four films for consideration. Entry fee applies with special discounts for early submissions.

The True/False Film Fest, Columbia, Mo.
The True/False Film Fest is open to all documentary films. The festival encourages submissions that cross the boundary between fact and fiction. The 2011 festival will take place Thursday, March 3, through Sunday, March 6, in downtown Columbia, Missouri.
