The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

Opportunities from the N.C. Arts Council

Regional Artist Project Grants 2010-11

Artists in participating North Carolina counties may apply for funding to pursue projects that further their career development. Grant amounts vary by region and project, but usually range between $500 and $2,000. Eligible projects include the creation of new work, purchase of supplies and materials, professional development workshops, travel support related to research or study, and production of promotional materials, including Web sites, CDs, DVDs and brochures. Deadlines are set by each region, with several in early August.

Two Requests for Artist Qualifications from the N.C. Arts Council

The North Carolina Arts Council seeks to commission artists for two park-sited public art projects, each of which will become a centerpiece of cultural tourism trails celebrating the state’s rich history, creative heritage and contemporary artistic practices.

The first public art project is for North Carolina’s African American Music Trail at All-America City Park in Kinston. The second is for North Carolina’s Historic Happy Valley Byway on the Yadkin River Greenway Trail in Patterson.

Applicant artists must be U.S. citizens or legal residents aged 18 years or older. Artists may apply to both RFQs, but they must submit two separate application packages.

General Artist Opportunities

ConsiderIt
ConsiderIt is an altruistic organization and online arts journal that presents original writing, visual media and music in order to raise funds for artists and select grassroots organizations. Every three months ConsiderIt hosts a contest for all writers, artists and musicians over 18 years of age. Finalists will be published on the Web site for three months and one winner will receive a cash award. Entry fee applies.

American Council of Learned Societies, New York, N.Y.
American Council of Learned Societies invites individuals to apply for the sixth annual Digital Innovation Fellowships. The fellowship program supports digitally based research projects in all disciplines of the humanities and humanities-related social sciences. Each fellowship carries a stipend of up to $60,000 toward an academic year’s leave and provides for project costs of up to $25,000.

Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival, La.
The 2011 Tennessee Williams Festival announces its first poetry contest. Ten finalists will be awarded passes to the festival. The 2011 Kore Press First Book Award is open to any female writer who has not published a full-length collection of poetry. Writers who have had chapbooks of less than forty-two pages printed in editions of no more than 400 copies are eligible. Entry fee applies.

City of Raleigh Arts Commission
The Piedmont Laureate program is accepting applications from creative nonfiction writers for 2011. Authors of works including biographies, autobiographies, memoirs, travel writings and new journalism are eligible to apply. Writers must be residents of Alamance, Durham, Orange or Wake counties. The 2011 piedmont laureate will receive a $6,500 honorarium to present readings and workshops and encourage creative writing and promote literature at select public events throughout the year.

Visual Artists

Monmouth Museum, Lincroft, N.J.
Monmouth Museum announces a call for artists for the Art From Found Objects juried exhibition Sunday, Sept. 12, through Sunday, Oct. 31. This exhibition focuses on artwork created from the undisguised, but often modified, use of common found objects that are not normally considered art. At least 75 percent of the media used to create works for this exhibition must be from discarded, reusable or found objects. Entry fee applies.

McColl Center for Visual Art invites artists and design professionals to submit a letter of interest for the inaugural Environmental Artist-in-Residence (EAIR) residency to create restorative works of art in the urban environment. This three-month residency program encourages artists to have beneficial impacts on the natural systems in the urban environment through the creation of environmental art installations that combine art, science, community and education.

National Museum of the American Indian, Washington, D.C.
The Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) will host the NMAI Art Market Saturday, Dec. 4, and Sunday, Dec. 5, at two indoor venues: the National Museum of the American Indian on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and at the museum's George Gustav Heye Center in New York City.
