The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.
The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

Opportunities from the N.C. Arts Council
Regional Artist Project Grants 2010-11
Artists in participating North Carolina counties may apply for funding to pursue projects that further their career development. Grant amounts vary by region and project, but usually range between $500 and $2,000. Eligible projects include the creation of new work, purchase of supplies and materials, professional development workshops, travel support related to research or study, and production of promotional materials, including Web sites, CDs, DVDs and brochures. Deadlines are set by each region, with several in early August.

 Two Requests for Artist Qualifications from the N.C. Arts Council The North Carolina Arts Council seeks to commission artists for two park-sited public art projects, each of which will become a centerpiece of cultural tourism trails celebrating the state’s rich history, creative heritage and contemporary artistic practices.
The first public art project is for North Carolina’s African American Music Trail at
All-America City Park in Kinston. The second is for North Carolina’s Historic Happy Valley Byway on the Yadkin River Greenway Trail in Patterson.
Applicant artists must be U.S. citizens or legal residents aged 18 years or older. Artists may apply to both RFQs, but they must submit two separate application packages.

General Artist OpportunitiesInner Banks Arts
Inner Banks Arts invites artists within the region of the Inner Banks to have a free directory listing online at www.IBXarts.org. IBXarts.org includes links to nearly 100 artists in 22 eastern North Carolina counties as well as links to artist operated galleries, local arts council galleries and Inner Banks art schools. The Web site features selected artists and reviews their work.

Performing Artists
The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation, San Francisco, Calif.
The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation and William and Flora Hewlett Foundation announce the 2010 Composer Collaboration Awards. Six grants of up to $75,000 will be awarded to composers collaborating in the creation and production of new music for concert, dance or theater performance.

Silver Glass Productions, Tampa, Fla.
Silver Glass Productions announces a call for female performing artists to participate in the first annual New Seeds Festival March 18, 19, 25 and 26, 2011. The festival is seeking original, socially relevant work in the genres of dance, music, comedy, theater, poetry and spoken word.

Greensboro Playwrights’ Forum
The Greensboro Playwrights’ Forum is currently accepting submissions for the 18th Annual N.C. New Play Project. A full-length play by a N.C. playwright will be selected for a workshop production by 3rd Stage Theatre Co. and will receive the $500 Mark Gilbert Award.

National Hispanic Media Coalition, Pasadena, Calif.
The NHMC’s Television Writers Program is an intensive scriptwriters workshop to prepare and place Latinos in writing jobs for the major television networks. The workshop is conducted in Burbank, Calif., and a total of 10 writers are recruited nationwide from our established network of NHMC chapters, other nonprofits agencies, schools, universities, writers, guilds and professional media organizations.

Submissions are being accepted for the second annual "Scare The Dickens Out of Us" ghost story contest. The contest is open to published and unpublished writers. All publication rights remain with the author.

Visual Artists
The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County
The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County and the City of Fayetteville are partnering to acquire and then exhibit public art for the Fayetteville/Cumberland County community. Artists ages 18 and older are invited to apply for the first annual Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition. Five completed works will be exhibited in Festival Park and downtown Fayetteville from Aug. 23, through July 24, 2011. Other selected works will be included in an online catalogue displayed for one year on the Arts Council's Web site for purchase or lease.

3rd Ward, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Artists are invited to submit a portfolio of their best completed work, work-in-progress or conceptual proposal to be considered for the 3rd Ward Solo Show in Brooklyn, N.Y. The selected winner will receive a $5,000 grant, a solo exhibition and a three-month residency.

Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh
In August, Visual Art Exchange will celebrate photographers and the work they produce with unframed photographs in a non-juried exhibition entitled Snapshot. Limit one photograph per artist.

Cabarrus Arts Council, Concord
The Cabarrus Art Guild Juried Show will accept submissions from artists 18 years of age or older and who reside in Cabarrus, Iredell, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties. The exhibition will take place Monday, Aug. 16, through Thursday, Oct. 7, at Cabarrus Arts Council Galleries. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, Tucson, Ariz.
Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance has issued a call to artists for a privately commissioned public art project to be incorporated into the new public plaza centrally located within the recently opened expansion at Tucson Mall.

SPARKcon, Raleigh (artSPARK)
The artSPARK Gallery will feature juried two- and three-dimensional artwork based on the theme “ignite/extinguish.” Interpretations of this theme may be literal, metaphorical, abstract or anything in between. Artists of all levels working in any style or medium are encouraged to apply. Local artists will be featured in various storefronts, windows and empty spaces along Fayetteville Street in downtown Raleigh during the SPARKcon festival Friday, Sept. 17, through Sunday, Sept. 19.

The Public Art Program of the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs requests the submission of qualifications from professional artists to work with the Park and Recreation Department and the Community of Pleasant Grove to create public art for Crawford Memorial Park.

Penland School of Crafts, Penland
Penland School of Crafts will host a weekend workshop on professional development for artists taught by the nonprofit group Creative Capital Friday, Oct. 1, through Sunday, Oct. 3. The workshop is limited to 24 participants and is open to artists living in the following western North Carolina counties: Ashe, Avery, Buncombe, Burke, Caldwell, Cherokee, Clay, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, McDowell, Mitchell, Polk, Rutherford, Swain, Transylvania, Watauga and Yancey. Texas Photographic Society, San Antonio, Tex.
The Texas Photographic Society invites amateur and professional photographers to submit images for the juried exhibition Captivar La Luz: A Latino Experience. Projects and individual images welcome. The exhibition is open to all photographers, as long as the subject of the work is related to Latin American life, culture, conflict and/or any social or economic issues in the U.S.

Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, Inc.
The Cultural Crossroads national juried exhibition will be held Thursday, Oct. 14, through Tuesday, Nov. 23, in Winston-Salem. Artists are encouraged to interpret the many aspects of the theme “Cultural Crossroads” — from individual, historical, cultural perspectives to the ways in which travel and other cross-cultural experiences have influenced their mode of expression.

Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, Wash.
The Seattle Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Seattle Department of Transportation, seeks an artist to develop site-specific artwork for the Mercer West street improvement project. The artwork will be located in an underpass and along adjacent concrete retaining walls at Mercer Street and Aurora Avenue. The desired artistic approach will treat the underpass as a singular architectural environment and transform the experience of passing through the space for all modes of transit.

City of Albuquerque, N.M.
The Albuquerque Arts Board announces a national RFQ to commission a work of electronic/digital media art. The site is located at Warehouse 508, a converted warehouse space in downtown Albuquerque, N.M. that provides opportunities for Albuquerque youth. This public art project is expected to serve as a thoughtfully integrated, electronic “digital mural” and as a “living art piece" whose technological aspects can be updated to reflect the current technological environment.

True/False Film Fest, Columbia, Mo.
The True/False Film Fest is open to all documentary films and encourages submissions that cross the boundary between fact and fiction. The festival highlights innovative work with a cinematic scope, creative takes on contemporary currents and most of all, work that provokes dialogue about its subject and the documentary form itself. The 2011 festival will take place Thursday, March 3, through Sunday, March 6.
