General Artist Opportunities

Two Requests for Artist Qualifications from the N.C. Arts Council

The North Carolina Arts Council seeks to commission artists for two park-sited public art projects, each of which will become a centerpiece of cultural tourism trails celebrating the state’s rich history, creative heritage, and contemporary artistic practices.

The first public art project is for North Carolina’s African American Music Trail at
All-America City Park in Kinston. The second is for North Carolina’s Historic Happy Valley Byway on the Yadkin River Greenway Trail in Patterson.

Applicant artists must be U.S. citizens or legal residents aged 18 years or older. Artists may apply to both RFQs, but they must submit two separate application packages.

Literary Artists

Gardner-Webb University, Boiling Springs

The Rash Awards have been created in honor of Ron Rash, acclaimed poet, novelist and short-story writer, who is an alumnus of Gardner-Webb University. The Rash Awards offer $500 prizes in fiction and poetry, as well as publication in The Broad River Review. The inaugural winners of The Rash Awards will also be invited to share the reading stage with Ron Rash at the Ron Rash Festival on the campus of Gardner-Webb University on Saturday, Oct. 2.

Lee & Low Books, New York, N.Y.

The New Voices Award is given to a children’s picture book manuscript by a writer of color. The award winner receives a cash grant of $1,000 and a standard publication grant, which includes basic advance and royalties for a first-time author. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash grant of $500. Entrants must be a first-time book author.

The Writer’s Center, Bethesda, Md.

The Writer’s Center is accepting submissions for the spring 2011 Emerging Writer Fellowships in the following genres: fiction, nonfiction and poetry. Emerging Writer Fellows will be featured at The Writer’s Center as part of their Emerging Writers Reading Series.The Writer’s Center bookstore will sell titles by the Emerging Writers throughout the season in which they appear in an effort to promote them and their work to a wide audience. Fellows receive an all-inclusive honorarium to help offset their travel costs, depending on their place of departure.

Upstream People Gallery

Upstream People Gallery was created to serve artists throughout the world by hosting international juried online art exhibitions. The 10th Annual Summer All Media Juried Online International Art Exhibition is open to all artists worldwide with artwork in all media, creative processes and forms. Cash awards of excellence and special recognitions will be given at the juror’s discretion.

The Reuse Alliance

The Reuse Alliance is inviting reclaimed-material artists (aka "trash artists") from the Southeast to submit proposals to exhibit their work at ReuseConex, the first National Reuse Conference and Expo Monday, Oct. 18, through Wednesday, Oct. 20, in Raleigh. Up to 10 artists will be selected for this first-of-its-kind opportunity. Selected artists will receive free exhibition space in the conference center, the ability to sell artwork to conference attendees and the public, national exposure and a discounted registration for full conference access.

TriMet, Portland, Ore.

TriMet, Portland Development Commission and the Port of Portland invite artists to submit their qualifications for a public art opportunity at the Mt. Hood MAX light rail station in the Cascade Station development in Portland. The artwork should celebrate the arrival to and departure from Portland and demonstrate the city’s commitment to sustainability.

Durham Arts Council

The Durham Arts Council, in partnership with the Durham Art Guild, the Town of Chapel Hill Office of Public Art, the Orange County Arts Commission and the Chatham County Arts Council, is pleased to join with the New York Foundation for the Arts to present three different career development opportunities for individual artists in all disciplines and representatives of small/emerging arts organizations. Durham Area Designers, Durham

Durham Area Designers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to citizen-based urban design, is seeking five qualified artists to assist in developing public art for transit shelters along the proposed route of the new Bull City Connector. The shelters will accommodate the art pieces by local artists in wind screens and identifying banners at each stop.

San Francisco Arts Commission

The San Francisco Arts Commission will conduct a selection process for an artist and architect/landscape architect team to develop a proposal for a tribute to the military veterans who have fought for their country. This will be part of the San Francisco Veterans’ Memorial Project in the War Memorial Complex.

South Carolina Watermedia Society, Lexington, S.C.

The 2010 South Carolina Watermedia Juried Competition will take place Saturday, Oct. 2, through Sunday, Nov. 21, at the Center for the Arts in Rock Hill, S.C. Western Carolina University, Cullowhee

Western Carolina University seeks applications for the 2010 Outdoor Sculpture Competition. It is open to sculptors ages 18 and older working in the Southeast (Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia). Five works will be selected for a one-year exhibition.

Southeastern Contemporary Art Gallery, Hammond, La.

The Southeastern Contemporary Art Gallery, on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana University, is now accepting entries for the National Cell Phone Photography Exhibition. The exhibition is open to amateurs and professional artists nationally. All artwork submitted for the exhibition must be taken with cell phone cameras and may only be manipulated with a cell phone application – no Photoshop or other photography manipulation software.

Visual Overture Magazine

Visual Overture Magazine, a quarterly exhibition-in-print publication, is now accepting entries for the "Featured Emerging Artists" section to be presented in the winter 2010 issue. Seven artists will be selected for feature in publication. Artists are presented on two pages of the magazine and receive three complimentary copies of the issue in which they are featured. Accepted genres include sculpture, metals, textiles, photography, mixed media, painting, drawing, video art, digital art, printmaking and installation.

Visual Overture Magazine

Visual Overture Magazine is accepting submissions for a special section of the magazine entitled “Spotlight on Video Art,” to be included in the winter 2010 issue. The section will feature the work of one serious emerging videographer whose work is fine art. Artists should submit two to three videos and a 500-word essay describing why the work can be classified as fine art.
