The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

General Artist Opportunities

N.C. Department of Cultural Resources

This is your last chance to participate in 2nd Saturdays: History, Heritage, Arts & Fun! The next deadline is June 30 for the August 14 event.

Visual artists can sell their work and there is no cost to participate. At most sites artists retain 100 percent of their sales. Artists are responsible for providing their own tables, tents and displays.

General Artist Opportunities

I-Park Foundation, East Haddam, Conn.
Thanatopolis, an alternative memorial park/space in the advanced conceptual phase of its development, is looking for works that incorporate the long-term goal of the project, which is to re-imagine our cultural and personal relationship to death, memory and memorialization. I-Park is accepting proposals in the following disciplines: music composition and sound sculpture; visual arts and environmental sculpture; theater, choreography and performance art; landscape and garden design; architecture; and landscape architecture. Selected projects will be presented at the Thanatopolis exhibition on Saturday, Oct. 2, and will receive a creative fee for their work.

United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County
The United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County is accepting applications for the Regional Artist Project Grant. The grant provides up to $1,500 in financial support to committed, individual artists and small, unincorporated groups of collaborating artists. The grant is designed to award projects that will advance the applicant’s career and is open to emerging and established artists in Franklin, Johnston, Vance, Warren and Wake counties.

Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies, Tempe, Ariz.
Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies is a peer-reviewed, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary journal of scholarship, creative work and personal essays. Frontiers seeks creative writing that critically engages issues of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality and place. The journal is interested in all kinds of creative work from poetry to short fiction to personal essays.

The Frost Place, Franconia, N.H.
The Frost Place invites applications for a six- to eight-week residency in poet Robert Frost's former farmhouse. The resident poet will have the opportunity to give a series of pubic readings across the region, including at Dartmouth College and St. Johnsbury Athenaeum. An honorarium of $1,000 will be given.

Greensboro Playwrights Forum
The Greensboro Playwrights Forum, a program of the City Arts Drama Center of the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department, is accepting submissions for its biannual An Evening of Short Plays. Plays must be 30 pages or less in standard format and the author must be a member of the Greensboro Playwrights Forum.

SPARKcon, Raleigh (PoetrySPARK)
PoetrySPARK is seeking local poets, novice or professional, to participate in a series of literary events during the SPARKcon festival Friday, Sept 17, through Sunday, Sept. 19. This year’s poetrySPARK will feature readings (including a poetry slam and an “After Dark” event), workshops, panel discussions and more.

Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies, Tempe, Ariz.
Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies seeks art submissions that critically engage issues of gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality and place. The journal is seeking all kinds of creative work; however, the art must photograph well in black and white or color. The images could serve as cover art and/or as part of an art essay.

Dott Art Gallery, Mechanicsville, Va.
Dott Art Gallery invites all artists to enter Footprints & Impacts: Traces of Humanity on Nature, Places or People Monday, July 5, through Saturday, July 31. All two- or three-dimensional art that meets the guidelines will be considered by the juror. Cash prizes will be awarded. Dott Art Gallery will donate 10 percent of all entry fees to Tri-State Bird Rescue and Research (www.tristatebird.org) to benefit the clean-up efforts taking place in the Gulf Coast region where the oil disaster is affecting humans and wildlife.

SPARKcon, Raleigh

Susan Kathleen Black Foundation, Lake George, Colo.
The Blossom Art of Flowers fine art competition was conceived to recognize, promote and reward excellence in floral art. The exhibition has one of the most lucrative cash pools of any fine art exhibition world-wide with $65,000 in total awards, including a $25,000 Best in Show prize. Approximately 100 entries will be featured in the premier exhibition at the Naples (Fla.) Museum of Art in February 2011.

Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh
The Junior League of Raleigh and Visual Art Exchange present Down Home: Portraits of the Old North State, a juried art exhibition Thursday, Oct. 21, through Sunday, Oct. 24. Artists may enter up to two pieces exploring this year's theme. This exhibit is open to all two-dimensional artwork, excluding photography, by living Carolina artists.

The Allied Artists of America 97th Annual National Exhibition is open to all artists working in oil, water media, pastels, graphics and sculpture. Medals and cash prizes totaling $24,000 will be awarded. The exhibition will be held Friday, Nov. 12, through Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Public Broadcasting Service
POV, public television's premier showcase for independent nonfiction film and video, seeks programs from all perspectives to showcase in its annual national PBS series. All subjects, styles and lengths are welcome. Each year, POV brings 14 to 16 new films to public television viewers. The summer series and year-round specials push the boundaries of nonfiction television with work from emerging and established filmmakers that reflects the range and diversity of American voices — viewpoints that enrich, enlarge, challenge and refine our experience of the world.

Sundance is now accepting proposals for the fall 2010 round. Projects of contemporary social relevance that explore critical issues of our time are encouraged to be submitted. Alexandria Film Festival, Va.
The fourth annual Alexandria Film Festival is soliciting entries from U.S. and international filmmakers. Three cash prizes will be awarded to top films at the festival: Best of Show ($500), Jury Prize ($300) and Audience Award ($200). Accepted film genres include narrative features, documentaries, shorts and animation. The festival will be held Thursday, Nov. 4, through Sunday, Nov. 7.

Camden International Film Festival
The Camden International Film Festival is committed to supporting and generating interest in independent documentary films. The festival is open to all documentary films of any length that tell a good story. Films that push the artistic boundaries of the form and films that shed light on the important issues in the world today are encouraged. The 2010 festival is scheduled Thursday, Sept. 30, through Sunday, Oct. 3, in Camden, Maine.

Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival, Calif.
The Sebastopol Documentary Film Festival is now accepting shorts and feature length documentary films for consideration for the 2011 festival to take place Friday, March 4, through Sunday, March 6. This festival is the only documentary festival named to “The 25 Coolest Film Festivals of 2009” by MovieMaker magazine.
