Artist Opportunities
The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.
The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

General Artist Opportunities
N.C. Department of Cultural Resources
Spaces are still available at numerous state historic sites and museums for artists to exhibit and sell their work this summer during 2nd Saturdays: History, Heritage, Arts & Fun. The next deadline is June 30 for the August 14 event.
Visual artists can sell their work and there is no cost to participate. At most sites artists retain 100 percent of their sales. Artists are responsible for providing their own tables, tents and displays.
Please note that most participating sites encourage all types of artist to register even though specific historical and cultural themes have been developed.

Times Square Alliance, New York, N.Y.
The Times Square Alliance seeks letters of interest from arts organizations and artists across disciplines to present contemporary art projects and art events in the public spaces in and around Times Square. In a one-page letter, applicants can propose a single project or series between September 2010 and December 2012. Artists and arts organizations are encouraged to propose projects that address the unique nature and rich history of Times Square.

University of Oklahoma College of Arts & Sciences, Norman, Okla.
Applications are now being accepted for the fifth biennial Thatcher Hoffman Smith Creativity in Motion Prize of $40,000. The prize recognizes an individual’s creative process as it unfolds. It is open to all fields and will be given to an individual whose creative project is currently underway. The focus of the award is on the process, not a completed project. Past applications have been received from practitioners of many disciplines: scientists, artists, filmmakers, authors, educators and more.

Aesthetica Magazine
Aesthetica Magazine announces its Creative Works Competition. This internationally recognized competition has three categories: artwork/photography, poetry and fiction. The competition represents the scope of creative activity today and provides an opportunity for both new and established artists to nurture their reputations on an international scale.

Literary Artists
Flash Fiction Magazine
Flash Fiction, a biannual international short story magazine, is looking for short stories up to 360 words (including title) to be published. Authors may submit up to eight stories for consideration for any issue. It is published in April and October.

Kinglake Publishing, United Kingdom
Kinglake Publishing Ltd. introduces its Unpublished Authors Competition which will provide unpublished authors the opportunity to see their book in print and have their book promoted and marketed by a publishing company. One novel will be selected every month to receive a contract of agreement. Each month will have a different genre.

North Carolina Humanities Council, Greensboro
The North Carolina Humanities Council is accepting submissions for the 2010 Linda Flowers Literary Award. This annual award recognizes original entries of fiction, nonfiction or poetry that draw on N.C. connections and/or memories. Authors do not have to be North Carolinians, and there is no entry fee.

Magnolia Arts Center, Greenville, N.C.
Magnolia Arts Center is now accepting scripts for the fifth annual Ten Minute Play Contest. Entries must be no longer than 10 minutes when read or performed. A panel of judges will pick the top five entries which will receive a staged reading for the public in November. Playwrights may submit original, non-published work to Magnolia Arts Center via mail or email.

Art Soup, Wilmington
Art Soup, a non-profit arts organization in Wilmington, is currently seeking published or self-published authors and poets to participate in an annual, large outdoor arts festival, Saturday, Sept. 11, in downtown Wilmington. The Wilmington Art Walk is an artist market throughout the streets of the historic downtown area, featuring visual artists, crafts, music and more. Literary participants are welcome to sell and sign copies of current or previous work at individual booths in a special section of the festival dedicated to writers.

Palettes & Quills, Rochester, N.Y.
Palettes & Quills announces its second Biennial Poetry Chapbook Competition. The contest is open to all writers. The winner receives $200 plus 50 copies of the published book. Manuscript should be between 15 and 40 pages with no illustrations.

Visual Artists
Atlanta Artists Center and Gallery, Ga.
The Atlanta Artists Center and Gallery invites artists 18 years of age and older to submit up to three pieces for the 2010 National Show juried by artist Michael David. The exhibition will be held Monday, Aug. 23, through Wednesday, Sept. 29. Painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, mixed media, collage and photography will be accepted. Cash prizes totaling $2,000 will be awarded.

North Hills Shopping Center, Raleigh
Raleigh’s North Hills Shopping Center will host the 2010 Midtown Plein Air Art Festival Saturday, June 19, and Sunday, June 20. This outdoor event, paired with the North Hills East Expansion Grand Opening, will be heavily promoted and will feature food, live music and visual arts. Most visual art mediums will be accepted.

Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vt.
Vermont Studio Center awards several fellowships for four-week residencies throughout the year. The fellowships are open to all artists and writers. In addition to VSC fellowships, a variety of special fellowships are also available for full or partial funding.

Center for Faith & the Arts, Salisbury
The Center for Faith & the Arts has issued a call for artists for the Abstraction and Beyond exhibition to run Thursday, July 15, through Saturday, Sept. 11. The exhibition will feature works that are either abstract or non-representational in nature. Artists may submit entries in any medium. Cash and other prizes will be awarded.

Hillsborough Arts Council
The Hillsborough Arts Council seeks submissions for a miniature art exhibition in all media Wednesday, June 23, through Friday, July 23. Artists living or who have studios in Orange, Alamance, Chatham, Durham or Wake counties are eligible. Original works of art in any media are accepted; size not to exceed 6” x 6” x 6”.

Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh
VAE announces a call for artists for Nothing Rhymes With Orange, an exhibition to be held Friday, July 2, through Thursday, July 29, in VAE’s main gallery. This show will explore the creative possibilities of the color orange. All work must feature orange as the dominant color.

TAG Gallery, Santa Monica, Calif.
TAG Gallery announces its 2010 California Open Exhibition Tuesday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Sept. 3. It is open to U.S. artists working in computer art, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture.

Town of Chapel Hill
The Public Arts Office of Chapel Hill invites artists, architects, design professionals and teams to submit letters of interest and images for Scrapple Hill II, a juried competition and exhibition focused on artwork fashioned from scrap materials. Selected artworks will be displayed throughout University Mall in Chapel Hill from Monday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Nov. 21. This is a juried competition and monetary awards will be offered.

SPACES, Cleveland, Ohio
SPACES, an experimental contemporary art space located on the western edge of downtown Cleveland, announces a call for entries open to all established or emerging artists, curators and cultural producers who are 21 years old or older to exhibit at SPACES gallery in 2011–2012.

Utah Department of Community and Culture
The Utah Public Art Program announces a call for artist's qualifications for the creation of public art for the new Utah Museum of Natural History in Salt Lake City. The selection committee is interested in commissioning artists that can create art that is inspired by natural history and will be relevant to the educational and scientific mission of the museum to inspire wonder and discovery of the natural world and the place of humans in it.

City of Norfolk, Va.
The City of Norfolk seeks to commission an artist to create artwork for the new Northside Skate Park. Artists are invited to submit qualifications to create a fun, bright, edgy piece that will serve as a signature marker for the park. Artwork must be fabricated on durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe and easily maintained.

Visual Art Exchange, Raleigh
VAE is accepting submissions for its 21st annual N.E.W. (Never Exhibited Works) Show to be held Friday, Sept. 3, through Thursday, Sept. 23. Works must have been created within 12 months of the entry deadline and not previously exhibited at another venue.

Clayton Area Chamber of Commerce announces a call for artists to submit designs for the commemorative 2010 Harvest Music Festival T-shirt and additional advertisements to promote the festival.

City of Boynton Beach, Fla.
The City of Boynton Beach Arts Commission invites artists to submit iconic artwork that has textural finishes, surfaces, grains, qualities and consistencies. The artwork can utilize sound, color or movement to communicate the texture theme. The artwork should hold up to the outdoor Florida environment for the year long display beginning September 2010 along the “Avenue of the Arts,” which stretches for more than seven blocks in the city’s downtown core.

Utah Department of Community and Culture
The Utah Public Art Program and the Ogden Weber Applied Technology College have issued a call for letters of interest and qualifications from artists or artist teams interested in creating art for the new Samuel H. and Marian K. Barker Family Health Technology Building on the main campus in Ogden, Utah. This call is open to U.S. artists.

Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts announces a call for submissions for its all-media juried national exhibition Transitions to take place during the month of September 2010.

Town of Chapel Hill
Sculpture Visions 2010–2011, an outdoor sculpture exhibition, is open to all artists creating original three-dimensional artwork of a scale and material suitable for outdoor display. North Carolina artists are encouraged to apply. Participating artists must carry liability insurance. The exhibition will be on view October 2010 through September 2011 in public places throughout Chapel Hill.

Caldwell Arts Council, Lenoir
The Caldwell Public Art Award will be awarded to one artist for a one-year outdoor installation in Caldwell County from September 2010 through August 2011. The award includes a $2,000 stipend to the winning artist. Entry fee is waived if registered for the Sculpture Celebration.

Caldwell Arts Council, Lenoir
The 25th Annual Sculpture Celebration will take place Friday, Sept. 10, and Saturday, Sept. 11, at J.E. Broyhill Park in Lenoir. Sculptors may enter three works of indoor or outdoor sculpture. If your submission for the Caldwell Public Art Award is chosen, this piece is to be shown as one of your three for display but it will not be considered for further awards.

Town of Chapel Hill
The Town of Chapel Hill is now accepting applications for the 38th Annual Festifall Celebration of Arts. Festifall will be held on Sunday, Oct. 3, on West Franklin Street in downtown Chapel Hill. Artists of all media are invited to participate in this event that attracts more than 10,000 people annually. This is a juried competition for eligible space. Up to 100 artists may be selected to exhibit and sell their artwork at the festival.

City of Santa Fe, N. M.
The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission, in partnership with Public Works Department and the Barrio la Canada neighborhood, announces a call to artists for a site-specific, outdoor artwork to enhance the existing entryway of the Barrio la Canada neighborhood in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Art Calendar Magazine
Artists are invited to enter Art Calendar's 2nd Annual Studio Makeover Contest, featuring more than $18,000 in prizes. Artists need to provide a narrative describing why they should win a studio makeover and provide a photo of their current art studio. Winners will be announced in the November 2010 issue.

Artography
The first annual Artography contest themed "How Great Is Your State?" is seeking submissions from artists across the United States in watercolors, acrylics, oils and pastels. This is a cross curriculum education project that will display selected entries from all 50 states online and also award prizes for Best in Show.
