Artist Opportunities

The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

N.C. Department of Cultural Resources

Spaces are still available at numerous state historic sites and museums for artists to exhibit and sell their work this summer during 2nd Saturdays: History, Heritage, Arts & Fun.

Currently spaces are available for the June 12 event at:

2nd Saturdays are also scheduled July 10 and August 14. The event time varies at each site but is generally 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Visual artists can use these opportunities to sell their work and there is no cost to participate. At most sites artists retain 100 percent of their sales. Artists are responsible for providing their own tables, tents and displays.

Please note that participating sites encourage all types of artist to register even though specific historical and cultural themes have been developed.

Deadlines: Extended to May 12 for June event; May 31 for July event; June 30 for August event.

Literary Artists

Oaxaca Cultural Navigator, Pittsboro
A published creative writer and veteran instructor is needed to lead a creative writing workshop that will employ journal, memoir and poetry as genres for self-expression as part of a women’s retreat to be held in the winter of 2011 in Oaxaca, Mexico. Writers must have experience facilitating writing workshops for adults. Compensation will include air travel, food and lodging, plus a modest stipend.

Visual Artists

The Arts Center of Greenwood, S.C.
The S.C. Festival of Flowers juried art show will take place Wednesday, June 2, through Tuesday, June 29. All two- and three-dimensional art mediums are accepted. More than $1,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Artists will be notified of acceptance by May 14.

Bridge for Emerging Contemporary Art, New Orleans, La.
The BECA Foundation is pleased to offer the Solo Exhibition, an opportunity for one artist or designer to exhibit new works of art or design at BECA International Center for Art + Design. Artists and designers 18 years of age or older are eligible. One artist or designer will be selected by BECA Foundation directors and advisors to receive the solo exhibition opportunity from Saturday, June 5, through Saturday, June 26. Submitted works are not required to conform to any particular medium, style, theme or concept. There is a $500 stipend available to the artist or designer who is awarded the Solo Exhibition.

Walkertown Civic Club, Walkertown
Walkertown Civic Club will host the first annual Walkertown Spring Fling and BBQ Cook-off scheduled Saturday, May 15. The event will include an arts and crafts area for artists to sell their work.

City of Phoenix, Ariz.
The Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture requests qualifications from professional artists to work with the city and community to create a landmark entrance and streetscape to significantly improve pedestrian access between the Pueblo Grande Museum and Phoenix’s new light rail system. The call is open to all U.S. artists.

Nicolet College, Rhinelander, Wisc.
The 23rd Annual Northern National Art Competition is open to all artists 18 or older who are U.S. residents. Artists may submit up to two original two-dimensional works in any medium. Must be able to hang artwork on wall. More than $8,500 in prize money will be awarded. The exhibition will take place Tuesday, July 27, through Friday, Sept. 10.

Fayetteville Art Guild
Fayetteville Art Guild announces a call to artists for a non-juried exhibition, Spring 2010 at Gallery ONE13. The exhibition will take place Friday, May 28, through Saturday, June 19. Artists are invited to enter up to two original works of art (maximum size 48”x48”) in any medium, including photography/digital art, jewelry and mixed media. There is limited space for this exhibition.

Fayetteville Art Guild
Fayetteville Art Guild announces a call to artists for its juried exhibition Visual Pleasures Friday, May 28, through Saturday, July 17 at the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. All two- and three-dimensional art, including photography/digital art, jewelry and mixed media, may be submitted. Cash prizes totaling $1,100 will be awarded.

Austin Art Space, Austin, Tex.
The second annual What Texas Means to Me juried awards show will take place Friday, July 1, through Saturday, Aug. 28. This show's theme is the artistic interpretation of Texas: past, present or future, and is open to all U.S. artists. Cash prizes will be awarded.

Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, Providence, R.I.
Artwork for the College of Pharmacy at the University of Rhode Island’s Kingston campus will be commissioned through Rhode Island’s Public Art Law. This art commission will be for the design and construction of a medicinal and wellness garden. Beyond serving as a botanical resource, the garden will inspire visitors to explore nature and the natural environment’s role in human wellbeing. The garden will be a unique work of art, a landscape that engages science, nature, aesthetics and human spirit.

Chateau du Pin, Loire Valley, France
Two sessions of Art Pluriel workshops will take place at Chateau du Pin in Loire Valley, France, July 12, through July 20 and July 23, through July 31. Genres include textiles, watercolor and printmaking as well as an open studio.

The Arts Council of Henderson County, Hendersonville
The Arts Council of Henderson County presents WOOD! — a competition open to original works of art in wood and paintings or two-dimensional wall art with trees or similar wood-related subject. Artists may enter up to three pieces of work in the categories of carved, turned, constructed and two-dimensional wall art. The show will take place Friday, June 4, through Saturday, July 3, at 538 North Main Street in Hendersonville.

Deadline: All work must be delivered between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Thursday, May 27, and Friday, May 28.

TAG Gallery, Santa Monica, Calif.
The TAG 2010 California Open Exhibition is open to U.S. artists ages 18 and older working in computer art, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking and sculpture. The exhibition will take place Tuesday, Aug. 17, through Friday, Sept. 3.

The 4heads Collective, Governors Island, N.Y.
4heads presents the third annual Governors Island Art Fair. Submissions are being accepted for the exhibition to be held every weekend in September. The call for submissions is open to all artists — two- and three-dimensional, video and installation. Last year more than 35,000 visitors attended Governors Island Art Fair.

Visual Overture Magazine
International emerging artists of any field are invited to apply for the fall 2010 Emerging Artists Competition of Visual Overture Magazine. Seven artists will be selected to be featured in the publication. Selected artists are presented on two pages of the publication and receive three complimentary copies of the issue in which they are featured. Genre categories are sculpture, metals, textiles, photography, mixed media, painting, drawing, video art, digital art, printmaking and installations.

The 56th juried exhibition at The Haggin Museum sponsored by Stockton Art League will take place Thursday, Sept. 2, through Sunday, Oct. 31. More than $5,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. The exhibition is open to all U.S. artists. No photography or computer art.

Filmmakers

The Light Factory, Charlotte
The Light Factory Filmmakers' Showcase highlights the art of short films created by emerging, established and student filmmakers. Submissions are accepted from filmmakers around the globe, while the showcase still maintains a special focus on regional filmmakers. The selected films will be screened at the Duke Energy Theatre Wednesday, May 19, through Friday, May 21.
