Artist Opportunities
The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.
The Arts Council does not endorse or recommend any specific opportunities, but provides this list for information only. We encourage artists to research each opportunity thoroughly before applying. Artist opportunities may be submitted to jennifer.huggins@ncdcr.gov.

General Artist Opportunities
N.C. Department of Cultural Resources
The N.C. Department of Cultural Resources is launching a new program this summer called 2nd Saturdays: History, Heritage, Arts & Fun. These 2nd Saturday events in June, July and August are an opportunity for artists to showcase their work at more than 30 state historic sites and museums across the state. The events will take place June 12, July 10 and August 14. The event time varies at each site but is generally 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Visual artists can use these opportunities to sell their work and there is no cost to participate. At most sites artists retain 100 percent of their sales. Artists are responsible for providing their own tables, tents and displays. Several sites would also like to include musicians and performing artists in these events.

Performing Artists
Association of Performing Arts Presenters, Washington, D.C.
Through the Cultural Exchange Fund, the Association of Performing Arts Presenters will award travel subsidies to individual presenters, presenting organizations and groups of presenters traveling to see the work of artists, companies and/or to develop and advance projects with international artists and their collaborators. All applicants must be active members of the Association of Performing Arts Presenters. In promoting cross-cultural arts programming, travel to locations including, but not limited to, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and Africa is encouraged.

Literary Artists
Sherwood Anderson Foundation, Madison
The Sherwood Anderson Foundation’s grant program for fiction writers supports fiction writers who have published no more than two books. The grant amount varies each year; the 2009 award was $15,000. The winner will be announced on or before September 1.

National Indie Excellence Awards, Beverly Hills, Calif.
The National Indie Excellence Awards celebrate all small press, independent publishers and self published authors. The awards are open to books published in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. Books must have an ISBN number.

Diamante Inc., Cary
Diamante Inc. is looking for Latino book authors of every genre, published both in Spanish and English, to promote their work during La Feria del Libro, a Latino book fair Saturday, May 22, at the Town of Cary’s Bond Park Community Center. La Feria del Libro will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature readings by Latino writers, panel discussions with writers and publishers, exhibitions and a book drive to give away thousands of books in Spanish.

Visual Artists
The Gallery at Vintage21, Raleigh
The Gallery at Vintage21 announces a call for artists for one month exhibitions of two-dimensional artwork. Vintage21’s gallery hosts an opening reception for artists and musicians every first Friday of the month, participating as part of the First Friday Raleigh downtown art walk.

Artspace, Raleigh
Artspace invites eligible artists to apply to be the Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence for July 2010–January 2011. This program provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. One artist in his or her early professional career is chosen from a regional pool of applicants.

Cary Jaycees, Cary
The Cary Jaycees and Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival present the second annual amateur photo contest. Everyone can participate, adults and youth — no professional work allowed. All entries will be displayed during the Spring Daze Festival on Saturday, April 24, at the Bond Park boat house. Community professionals will judge all entries and winners will be announced that day.

The LoDi Project, Raleigh
The LoDi Project presents the Off the Beaten Path Art Festival and installation of 100 percent, all-natural biodegradable environmental art installations/sculptures to be exhibited at Lake Johnson in Raleigh Sunday, April 25. Ten to 12 artists (or teams of artists) will be selected to create and present their work throughout the two-and-a-half mile path that surrounds Lake Johnson. Festival attendees will walk the length of the path to view the artwork. LoDi will produce a full-color catalog documenting all of the works exhibited at the festival.

The LoDi Project, Raleigh
As part of the Off the Beaten Path Art Festival in Raleigh, and to celebrate Earth Day 2010, The LoDi Project is turning Lake Johnson's Waterfront Center into an art gallery. For this exhibition titled Out of the Box, artists are asked to submit works using recycled cardboard as one of the main materials of the work. Artists who apply can enhance the recycled cardboard by using a variety of media and multiple techniques, such as photography, digital design, graffiti, calligraphy, relief sculpture, collage or painting. LoDi will produce a full-color catalog documenting all of the works exhibited at the exhibition.

Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Tex.
The Texas Tech University System seeks to commission an artist to develop outdoor public sculpture(s), outdoor seating and/or landscaping to be located on the south side of the new Rawls College of Business Administration building.

University of Florida, Gainesville
The University of Florida is seeking to purchase pre-existing works of art for interior wall locations of the Counseling and Wellness Center. Artwork must be available for delivery in May 2010. Prices given by the artist must include all framing, shipping and installation costs.

The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County
The Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County presents Public Works, a community-wide art exhibition for all artists Friday, April 23, through Saturday, May 22. Anyone living in Bladen, Cumberland, Harnett, Hoke, Lee, Montgomery, Moore, Richmond, Robeson, Sampson and Scotland counties, Fort Bragg or Pope Air Force Base is eligible.
Deadline: All artwork must be delivered to the Arts Council between Thursday, April 15, and Saturday, April 17.

Maine Arts Commission, Augusta, Maine
The Maine Arts Commission seeks artists living in the U.S. to submit proposals to design, create and install artwork at the Durham Community School in Durham, Maine. The community is interested in artwork that acknowledges the rural setting of the school (grades Kindergarten through eighth), but also indicates that the school is the dynamic center of its current and future community.

Maine Arts Commission, Augusta, Maine
The Maine Arts Commission seeks artists living in the U.S. to submit proposals to design, create and install artwork at the Gorham Elementary School in Gorham, Maine. The school is looking for artwork that is appropriate and accessible for students (grades Kindergarten through fifth), but educationally challenging and timeless as these students progress through their educational development. It also should have universal appeal for the staff and adults of this community.

City of Austin, Tex.
The City of Austin Art in Public Places is accepting proposals for the Seaholm Electrical Substation Wall Project. Interested artists or artist teams must contact the City’s Art in Public Places program via email or phone to receive the full RFQ.

Primary Colours, Indianapolis, Ind.
Primary Colours seeks contemporary artists with experience in creating installation art for a unique exhibition Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5 entitled Installation Nation. Artists are asked to submit a proposal to create an installation piece within the confines of a 20-foot metal shipping container. From the submitted proposals, Primary Colours will select seven projects and give artists each $750 to create his or her vision.

Rochester Contemporary Art Center, Rochester, N.Y.
RoCo presents 6x6x2010, the third exhibition of thousands of original works of art made and donated by celebrities, international and local artists, designers, college students, youths and you. Each work will be six by six inches square and signed only on the back so that each work is exhibited anonymously. All artwork will be for sale to the public for $20 to benefit Rochester Contemporary Art Center. Artists' names will be revealed to the buyer only upon purchase and all works will remain on display for the duration of the exhibition.

Lewiston Council on the Arts, Lewiston, N.Y.
Artists are invited to enter the 44th Annual Lewiston Art Festival Juried Show to be held Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15. Artists will compete for $5,000 in awards in a wide range of fine art and artistic craft categories.

The second annual Big Print Block Party and Art Festival will take place Saturday, May 22, in Carolina Beach. Fine art and master crafter booths are available.

City of San Diego, Calif.
Artists or artist teams authorized to work in the U.S. are eligible to apply for the Asian Pacific Historic District Gateway Project. Teams may include cross-disciplinary members (architects, landscape architects, etc.), but an artist must serve as the team leader.

Southern Colorado Watercolor Society, Pueblo, Colo.
The Aquarius National 2010 Watercolor Exhibition will be held at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center Saturday, Aug. 14, through Saturday, Oct. 23. More than $2,500 in awards will be presented as well as a one-person exhibition at the Sangre de Cristo Center. The exhibition is open to all artists living and working in North America 18 years of age or older.

City of Memphis, Tenn.
The City of Memphis and UrbanArt Commission are working together to create public artworks for the first two sections of the Wolf River Greenway to be built in 2010. Artists will be selected based on previous experience with outdoor sculpture and are expected to have the technical capabilities to design and install such projects, including providing maintenance instructions.

North Hills, Raleigh
The Midtown Plein Air competition and arts festival returns to North Hills for its second year. Artists of all ages are invited to set up around the property to paint scenes at North Hills. All paintings will be completed in the plein air style in April and May and will be judged during the festival, which will take place Saturday, June 26, and Sunday June 27. The festival will also feature works from area artists for sale and display.

Commonwheel Artists Co-op, Manitou Springs, Colo.
Commonwheel Artists 36th Labor Day Festival is a three-day event that is held in historic Manitou Springs’ Memorial Park. The weekend festival is filled with high quality artwork, talented performers and fabulous food. Approximately 100 artists’ booths fill the park. A jury of professional artists will determine which artists and artisans are chosen. The festival will be held Saturday, Sept. 4, through Monday, Sept. 6.

Franklin Square Gallery, Southport
The Associated Artists of Southport will present the 2010 Juried Summer Regional Show Monday, June 21, through Saturday, July 17, at Franklin Square Gallery. The show is open to both professional and emerging artists 18 years of age or older.

Tryon Painters and Sculptors, Tryon
Tryon Painters and Sculptors will offer a juried art show Saturday, June 27, through Saturday, July 31, in Gallery One at the Tryon Fine Arts Center. The Green Piece exhibition will feature artwork using recyclables, found objects and anything that tickles the artist’s fancy!
