The N.C. Arts Council is pleased to share the following opportunities for artists that have recently been submitted to us. Please contact the organization listed if you have any questions.

Performing Arts

NC State University Theatre, Raleigh
NC State University Theatre is holding auditions for TheatreFest 2011: Southern Comfort, which will include a series of three plays from Thursday, May 26, through Sunday, June 26. Actors, singers and musicians are needed.

Literary Arts

Nâzım Hikmet Poetry Festival, Cary
The third annual Nâzım Hikmet Poetry Festival will be held Sunday, April 17. Interested poets are invited to submit their poems. The selected poems will be published online at the festival’s website as well as in the festival chapbook, and the poets will be invited to read their winning poems and introduce their poetry at the festival. Each finalist will receive an award of $100.

Atelier 6000, Bend, Oregon
Atelier 6000 has issued a call to artists for the juried exhibition The Stolen Image to take place Tuesday, March 1, through Thursday, March 31. The exhibition is open to artists at least 18 years of age. The Stolen Image explores (without violating copyright) ways in which artists recycle found words and images into their own original work. Cash prizes will be awarded. Entry fee applies.

Durham Arts Council, Durham
The Durham Arts Council is seeking submissions to the annual call for artists for 2011–2012 solo exhibitions in the Allenton and Semans Galleries of the historic Durham Arts Council facility in downtown Durham. Only two-dimensional works will be accepted. Applications are accepted online at www.callforentry.org.

The Clearwater Public Art and Design program is seeking to commission an artist or artist team to create a project for the new U.S. 19 and State Road 60 interchange in Clearwater, Fla. This public art commission is open to all professional artists and artist teams residing within the U.S.

City of Tacoma, Wash.
The City of Tacoma invites experienced artists, creative teams and/or art consultants who reside in the U.S. to submit their qualifications for an opportunity to develop a public art plan for the half-mile/two-acre Prairie Line Trail. The trail is a historic rail corridor connecting downtown Tacoma’s significant recreational, cultural and educational destinations to its waterfront. Project budget is $30,000.

Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Pittsburgh, Pa.
The Pittsburgh Arts Council’s Office of Public Art seeks to commission an artist to join the design team La Quatra Bonci Associates to create an innovative project that connects Wood Street to the newly created Mon Wharf Landing in downtown Pittsburgh. The artist’s conceptual proposal budget for the project is $15,000.

HATCH Photography, Asheville
HATCH Photography is seeking submissions to UP CLOSE, a projected guerrilla exhibition to take place during the four-day HATCHfest in downtown Asheville. The projected exhibition will move to different, undisclosed locations on two nights, Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 15. The theme is “up close,” and it is open to each individual interpretation. Submitted works must be photo-based, but can incorporate other media.

Artspace is accepting applications for regional emerging artist-in-residence. This residency provides emerging visual artists residing in N.C. with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. The six-month residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Application fee applies.

City of San Luis Obispo, Calif.
The City Of San Luis Obispo has issued an RFQ for a public art piece for the Community Gardens at Meadow Park. The competition is open to professional artists or artist team living in the U.S. capable of creating a major outdoor public artwork.  The project budget is $65,000.

City of Baltimore, Md.
The Baltimore Office of Promotion and the Arts is seeking interested artists and/or artist collaborators to submit qualifications for consideration and inclusion in Baltimore’s pre-qualified public artist list. The pre-qualified list will go into effect upon review and approval of the Public Art Commission and remain in effect for two years. This list will be utilized and referenced for upcoming public art projects under the 1%-for-Public Art program.

Visual Overture Magazine, Atlanta, Ga.
Visual Overture Magazine, a juried exhibition-in-print, is now accepting submissions for the upcoming competition “Spotlight on Opposites.” This competition will select one emerging artist whose work deals with opposites for a one-page article spotlighting his/her work in Visual Overture Magazine. The opposing dualities may be expressed in a variety of ways — subject matter, symbols, color combinations, audience participation, and/or other creative avenues. Entry fee applies.

The Albuquerque Arts Board and the Silver Gardens Art Selection Committee are requesting proposals for a public art project in downtown Albuquerque. The site is located at a parking structure that serves residents of the Silver Gardens mixed income affordable housing project and the general public. The site will support a unique, one-of-a-kind artwork for residents and visitors alike. This call is open to artists and designers who live in the U.S.

Western Wake Artists Studio Tour, Wake County
Western Wake Artists Studio Tour invites new and returning artists to submit their applications for the 2011 studio tour to take place Saturday, Nov. 12, and Sunday, Nov. 13. The tour will be accompanied by “Meet the Artist” exhibitions at the Halle Cultural Arts Center in Apex and at the new Cary Community Arts Center. Participants must be professional working artists with exhibition experience living in western Wake County (Apex, Cary, Fuquay-Varina, Holly Springs, Morrisville, etc.). Entry fee applies.

Nicolet College, Rhinelander, Wis.
Nicolet College Art Gallery is accepting submissions for its 24th annual Northern National Art Competition to be held Tuesday, July 26, through Friday, Sept. 9. Spartanburg Art Museum, Spartanburg, S.C.
Spartanburg Art Museums presents the juried exhibition For Real? Tuesday, Sept. 13, through Friday, Nov. 11. It is open to artists residing in the Carolinas and Georgia. Artists are encouraged to submit a painting that is a copy of a master painting created by an artist deceased for at least 100 years for juror consideration. Artists must sign each work on the front surface of the painting. A digital reproduction of the original will be displayed along side the artist’s painting.
