Help getting around

Please read our privacy policy. The North Carolina Arts Council is a division of the Department of Cultural Resources, a state agency.

We want our site to be a window for connecting to the arts throughout North Carolina and so we are constantly evolving its structure. Please contact us with your comments and suggestions or if you have any problems finding your way around our site.

Our site is designed to take advantage of the graphic capabilities of the internet. As the state arts agency, we are excited about the potential for sharing visual images. We have tried to label all images that are used as navigation buttons or that contain text on this site so that visitors with slow browsers or those using assistive technologies for the visually impaired can disable the image loading and still navigate our site.

Searching our site

We have added the ability to search our site for Artists, Arts Organizations, and Arts Events happening in our state.

For example, to find a local artist, go to the Arts Directory section of the site, then click on Find an Artist. This will reveal a page of options and menus to narrow down your search.

Check the boxes to include in the search results artists in a particular county, city, or region, artists who work in or more of the media listed, and artists who have received some special award or recognition. The more items you include, the more results you will get back, so if the list you come to is extremely long, you may want to go back to the search page and narrow your search by removing some locations or artforms from your search.

Once you have made your choices, click the "Search Artists" button, and you will be taken to the list of artists who met your specifications.

The search feature for organizations works the same way.

Searching by Key Words

In addition to finding artists and arts organizations, you may also search our site by key words to find pages on our site that match a particular need or answer a specific question.

To do this, at the upper left corner of every page is a search box. Enter the word or words you want to search for in this box, then hit Enter or click the Go button. You will be taken to a list of the page titles of those pages, events and news releases on our site where any of the words you entered appeared. Click on one of these titles to see that page.

Mailing Lists and Database

If you would like to be added to our mailing list, please submit the Database Entry Form.

If you can't find what you are looking for on our web site, please contact us to request information from our database of over 40,000 records. One of our services is providing database searches for lists or labels as well as custom queries by artform, zipcode, county, etc., for modest fees. Many standard lists of North Carolina arts organizations are available free of charge.

The information stored by the Council includes only those constituents requesting or receiving Council services. Therefore, not all individuals or organizations in the state in any particular interest group, type of organization or discipline are necessarily listed. Please let us know of any artists or groups that should be included by completing the Database Entry Form.

Usage guidelines: Information released by the Council may not be sold or used for non-arts commercial purposes. It may not be re-released or retained for future use without reference to the North Carolina Arts Council database as the source and the date originally obtained. One copy of any mailing or report using Council addresses or statistics must be provided to the Council. Use of Council data constitutes acceptance of these terms.

Some icons and their meanings:

HelpThis Help icon will appear on every page in the site; click on it to return to this page for tips on navigating within our site.

Translate with BabelfishThis icon will also appear on all the pages on this site. It links to the Babelfish service of AltaVista.com to translate the current page's contents into Spanish.

Some pages on our site have lists of links on them that go to different places within our site, or link to other websites. To differentiate these links, we use two kinds of icons in these lists.

>>  Links with this "Double Arrow" after them indicate a link which will open another website. These will also usually open in another window. These arrows will also sometimes indicate a link that goes to another section of the NCArts.org site.

[...]  Links with this ellipsis icon after them generally lead to pages with menus or forms on them which lead to additional choices to make before getting to a final destination. These pages are typically search forms that allow you to narrow down the kind of information you are looking for or pages that require you to sign in.

Some general tips for getting the most out of your visit

  • The link you are about to visit will be named at the bottom of your browser window. You can see these cues when you maximize your browser window.
  • Our logo appears in the upper left corner of most site pages. Click on our logo or the Home menu item to return to our Home page.
  • Don't forget to Bookmark our site before you leave. To do this, use Control-D on a PC or Command-D on a Mac. Or in Explorer, click on Favorites, and select Add to Favorites; in Netscape, click on Bookmarks, and select Add Bookmark.
  • You can use your Back button to see the last few pages you have visited.
  • Our site has many layers of information. We have organized it as subpages within each main navigation area. Each site area has a menu along the left-hand side of the page, and the current site area is highlighted in this menu.
