Biography
David Brewin and Joseph Miller are North Carolina blacksmiths who collaborated on this project. Both artists live in western North Carolina and have spent hours observing the fauna and flora of the region to bring real experiences to the project. Earlier they combined their traditional blacksmithing techniques to create such works as fireplace furniture for a resort in Georgia, chandeliers and wall sconces for two churches in western North Carolina as well as a hand-forged railing for a private home in Asheville. They also work independently.

Project Description
Two garden gates lead into the Spring and Stream Gardens of the N.C. Arboretum. Animals and plants indigenous to the Appalachian region are represented in the garden gates. Two sycamore trees located on either side of the gate flank the Stream Garden Gate. A stainless steel stream flows through the scene. Animals perched on tree branches and trout swimming in the stream complete the scene.
The Spring Garden Gate depicts a small mountain stream in stainless steel surrounded by flourishing rhododendron and pitcher plants. Two paths lead away from the spring, marked with footprints of animals and humans in search of water.
