Biography
Byron's work often combines artistry and social responsibility. It is her belief that art can be a vital tool to foster understanding and build connections among people. She organized and currently administers a mentoring program through the Corcoran School of Art where young people partner with established artists who serve as advisors and role models. Byron studied drawing and printmaking at the Corcoran School of Art as well as drama and speech at Ithaca College. She creates work based on her theater training in Method Acting, which emphasizes being in the moment. She seeks vulnerability in her subjects and pushes for intensity through her drawing, printing and carving.

Project Description
Byron's work focuses on people, much like the focus of the School of Social Work. Her portraits of North Carolinians are displayed in the public areas of the building. Early in the project Byron traveled throughout the state photographing a wide variety of people. The photographs were translated into large color drawings that were then turned into woodcut prints. Beside the portraits are the following questions: Who are these people? -- Who are they to each other? -- Who are they to you? The questions reinforce the conceptual theme of the work and allow viewers to consider themselves and their relationship with others.
