David A. EdgarArt Form: Mixed Media/Sculpture/Crafts/Multi-Disciplinary Visual Arts Charlotte, NC Phone: 704/365-6538 Touring Artists Directory ProfileDavid A. Edgar is a professionally-trained, mid-career sculptor with significant experience as a teacher of studio arts programs for both community and post-secondary education settings. He began working with recyclable plastics in the spring of 2004, after more than two decades of working with fabricated steel. Working with recyclable plastics results in colorful, lightweight, and uniquely-crafted artworks that embrace a festive aesthetic while commenting on our fragile ecology. The environmental aspects of using recyclable materials are becoming increasingly accepted within the contemporary craft and fine art world. The response to Edgar’s artwork has been quite favorable, as evidenced by over 50 juried exhibitions in 22 states since 2004. In conjunction with exhibiting his work in recyclable plastics, Edgar has been invited to give numerous demonstrations and workshops that focus on the characteristics of this unique material. In addition to eight years as an Associate Professor of Art, Edgar’s resume also includes a Summer Affiliate Residency at the McColl Center for Visual Art in Charlotte. He has also conducted several week-long sculpture teaching residencies at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown. Programs range from one-hour lecture/demonstrations to one- and two-day workshops in which Edgar teaches and inspires others to create their own artwork from recycled plastics. These programs can be held in a variety of locations, including classrooms, festivals, and community centers, and are suitable for adults and teens, as well as children ages 10–12 accompanied by an adult. Participants need only bring clean plastic bottles and a selection of ordinary household hand tools. Custom-designed creative residency projects and large-scale installations with large groups of participants are also available. Fees: $150–$500 plus expenses for lecture/demonstrations, $500 plus expenses for one-day workshop, $750–$1,000 plus expenses for two-day workshop. Fees for residencies negotiable, based on situation and commitment required. |
